Women have served in the Australian armed forces since 1899. Did you know that in today’s Australian Defence Force (ADF) women can work in over 200 roles, and receive the same training, salaries and opportunities as men. Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals significant progress: women made up 20.6 percent of the ADF in 2021, a remarkable increase from six years earlier when I left the services when it was just 14.4%. Reflecting on the past 20 years, this is a substantial rise from just 12.5 percent in 2014. However, despite these gains, there remains a considerable journey ahead. Women continue to be underrepresented in the non-traditional employment roles within the ADF. Less than 10 % of women serve in aviation, combat and security, engineering and construction sectors. This stark statistic underscores the need for continued efforts to break barriers and promote gender equality in all areas of military service. As we acknowledge the great strides that have already been made, it's clear that there is more work to be done to ensure women have equal opportunities across all segments of the ADF. Let's continue to support and champion initiatives that drive inclusivity and diversity, paving the way for future generations of women in the armed forces. So around once a week I do (or get my team) to do some research on why I am so passionate about promoting women in non-traditional roles. For anyone who knows me, I served for 23 years in a non-traditional aviation and engineering role in the Australian Navy. At that time there was less than 10% women in these roles. While the ADF has come a long way at getting women recognised for their great achievements, we must not lose sight of how statistics can be manipulated. While the Army and Air Force has exceeded their targets last year on total women in their respective services, it does not show how few of them are actually in non-traditional roles. We need to promote how great these roles are for both men and women and unite as a servicing force. SALUTE THE WINGS OF GIRLS The story of the first three women fighter pilots in India is an inspiring one, marking a significant milestone in the country's military history. Introduction:- In June 2016, India made history when three women—Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth, and Mohana Singh—became the first women fighter pilots to be commissioned into the Indian Air Force (IAF). This event was a monumental step forward for gender equality in India's defence forces and a significant shift in military policies that previously restricted women from combat roles. Breaking Societal Norms:Women entering combat roles, particularly fighter pilots, often face societal expectations about traditional gender roles. Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth, and Mohana Singh faced questions and doubts from people who believed that women couldn’t handle the physical and mental stress of being fighter pilots. Proving Themselves: The perception that fighter jets are "not suitable for women" was a challenge these pioneers had to overcome. Despite skepticism from some parts of society and even within the military, their exceptional performance has changed the narrative. Male-Dominated Environment:The armed forces have historically been male-dominated, and while the entry of women has been welcomed in recent years, they still face gender-based discrimination and biases. Integrating women into combat units is not just about physical ability but also shifting cultural attitudes within the military. Work-Life Balance: Personal Sacrifices: Balancing the demands of a military career with personal life is often more challenging for women, especially in cultures where they are traditionally expected to fulfill familial roles. Fighter pilots are required to be on call at all times, ready for missions or deployments, which leaves little time for personal life. Support Systems: Having a strong family support system has been key for these women to pursue their ambitions. For instance, Mohana Singh’s family background in the military gave her an understanding of the challenges and encouraged her to push forward. Societal and Global Impact Societal Perception. International Comparisons: India’s decision to induct women into combat roles aligns with global trends where countries like the U.S., Israel, and the U.K. have integrated women into combat units over the last few decades. The move has been hailed as progressive and necessary for a modern military. A Step Toward Equality: The decision to allow women into fighter pilot roles marks a significant step in military gender equality. While women have served in the armed forces for years, opening combat roles to them breaks the final glass ceiling in terms of military service. Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth, and Mohana Singh have carved out a place in history as India’s first female fighter pilots.
