Redesigning Education Part 1: New Values It’s time to redesign education for the 5% of student it can never engage. Australia does have specialised education settings and schools (with amazing teachers) - but in our work at CRANK we see that even these specialised solutions do not work for many CREW we coach at CRANK - No Barriers. Why? Below are my observations: Neurodiverse kids do not learn in our industrialised 1-to-many classrooms and school environments. Nor do they respond to education that is forced upon them. The only solution is to entice their interests and create new more meaningful solutions which work by overcoming barriers such as anxiety, past trauma, social disconnection and the guilt of not being able to live up to family and peoples exactions. At CRANK we have been building a new pedagogy that engages school refusers and people with autism that are marginalised and left to fall through gaps in education and society. Our new pedogogy has all the big buzz words (personalised, gamified, flexible and so on) but the real magic is something else. We are creating deeper more meaningful connections and building a community based on four simple values: Family - acceptance and valuing who they are as individuals, deeper social connection between teachers and student and other students Fun - it’s time to rethink a curriculum that mostly readies people for a Tertiary (Uni) pathway. Let’s build curriculum around what people are interested in - tech, life, gaming, what is new and what they choose. Rote learning sucks, project based learning is better but what is the right model Empowerement - how does fun connect with building choice, control and confidence in not just learning but life. Education is not just about academia - it’s about life and success and education should primarily be empowering for life Accountability - tests don’t work for these kids. Why are we creating anxiety when simple routine, rewards and self accountability is more important. Trust these kids as they have some very magic skills! Did you watch Four Corners? This really fits with everything we’re picking up. Reconnecting and rebuilding relationships is so important and having a more coherent system would make that so much more straightforward

Absolutely, as we say here at SEND: “it is ALL about relationships”💗 We work with schools to create a holistic eco-system where all community members have a sense of belonging and mutual respect and understanding. Dividing ourselves and generating conflict is an all too easy trap to fall into… However, we all have the same priority; whether you are a parent, carer, child, school leader, teacher, staff member or part of the wider community, we all want the best for our learners. The children and their futures is all that really matters. If we can find the ties that bring us all together, we can achieve an environment where it is secure and safe, for both staff and children and welcoming for parents. We know to be able to thrive and learn we need to feel safe and wrapped up in secure relationships. Neat article on why developing schools as system leaders is critical!👇 This quote sums up the work I feel I’ve been doing: “We know, that feeling included and having a sense of belonging can be nurtured by the environment created in schools, with teacher-student relationships at the heart, strong connection with parents, and schools which are part of the place in which they sit – to which they truly belong.” But this quote comes up again & again in the Places were I’ve been spending time: “The days of blind trust in institutions and professions are long gone.” Mistrust in “the system” needs to be recognised and trust needs to be rebuilt, but we don’t build trust by ‘doing to’ people, we build it by involving people and becoming part of the system. #PlaceMaking

We've seen an increase in exclusions and school refusals this past year. We've also played a significant part in helping hundreds of young people gain the support they need before they hit crisis point and to reflect on teachable moments. At Lifespace Trust we don't offer prescriptive, off the shelf, fixed term or 'conveyor belt' packages of support. Instead, we see each young person as unique and make the time to really get to know each other. We take a systemic approach, one where every interaction is youth-led: from setting the agenda to shaping the format and duration of our sessions. By truly 'seeing' each young person our mentors can build a bespoke toolkit for each mentee; exploring tools and techniques to help in the moment and to take with them. We feel passionately that timely, youth-centred interventions like #TheLifespaceWay are key to ensuring a tough chapter doesn't turn into a difficult story. That's why we've taken our place in a national working group around the #WholeSchoolApproach to Mental Health and Wellbeing - sharing our experiences, and those of each young person we support, to lobby for systemic change. nurtureuk Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) National Children's Bureau
