Today is #EarthDay2024 and this year’s theme is #PlasticsVsPlanet. Here in the US, 95% of all plastics go unrecycled. According to the ICUN, at least 14 million tons of plastic makes it way into the ocean every year and makes up 80% of ocean debris. The impact on marine wildlife is devastating. In a world where plastic is so pervasive, we must do more. We have long advocated the mantra of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle but it’s not working. Several organizations are advocating a new approach: Refuse, ReThink, and ReDesign. Thanks to work by organizations like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, we can work to eliminate plastic pollution. Four years ago today, as the Discovery & Learning Team Leader, I filmed a quick video announcing the ban on plastic straws in England. 🥤🧃🧉 🟢 It would be interesting to see the measurable impact such a move made on the environment. 🔴 I would also love to find out more about how other - this time very opposite - actions, such as the introduction and dumping of single used face covers affected the same environment, too, in the similar period in time. What was the impact? Which measures carry more weight and should be prioritised? What else can we focus on?
