𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 – Part 2 The Future is hybrid – but what about costs and security? After my recent article about cloud-based storage solutions in the m&e field (https://lnkd.in/gJbKfJuD -- “Transition to Cloud-Based Storage…”), I want to follow up on this topic, and shed some light on the topics of “𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀” of such hybrid set-ups. Both factors are of utter importance, and especially hybrid storage solutions combining cloud and on-premises storage, potentially offer a strategic advantage by being able to optimize both aspects. 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 A smartly designed hybrid set-up can provide a more cost-effective solution than each storage environment by itself. The on-premises portion of the overall solution can pose a large upfront investment; however, on the upside, the costs for hardware part are transparent and lead to stable, predictable (maintenance) costs in the long-run. As opposed to cloud storage, there are no variables, no “surprise” expenses. The cloud, on the other hand, provides a pay-as-you-go model that can be scaled up or down, providing the very sexy option to expand (or shrink) the storage space according to your fluctuating needs. This feature may come with a massive price tag if you don’t pay attention about your data flow as accessibility fess can be enormous. 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 In times of sky rocketing cybercrime, like theft of precious (unpublished) video content, data security is just as important as the factor. It goes without saying that on-premises storage, when secured properly, provides organizations complete control over their data security environment. From firewalls and DMZ’s (demilitarized zones) to IP whitelisting and access control, sensitive content can be managed securely pretty much without fail. Cloud storage vendors offer advanced security measures, either provided by themselves, or backed by 3rd party expertise. Those teams are on top of updates and zero-day patches that keep your data safe against the emerging threats. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 A hybrid approach enables businesses to strategically place their data based on sensitivity, regulatory restrictions, and access frequency. Critical and confidential assets can remain on-premises for enhanced security and compliance, while less sensitive data can take advantage of the cloud's flexibility and cost-effectiveness. 𝗠𝘆 𝟮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: A hybrid storage approach can be a smart move, as it opens the door to more cost-effective data management strategies. I strongly advise though to look beyond the technical core data. By combining on-premises and cloud storage, businesses can reduce costs while maintaining or even improving data security, and implementing a hybrid approach could be the key to achieving balance in both cost and security. #HybridStorage #DataSecurity #CostEfficiency #StorageSolutions #DataManagement

🔒 ☁ What is Microsegmentation? ☁🔒 Microsegmentation Explained: Microsegmentation divides a network into segments and applies security controls to each segment based on its requirements. This approach is particularly useful in cloud deployments, creating granular secure zones that isolate workloads with custom, workload-specific policies. How Microsegmentation Works: Microsegmentation (aka. Zero Trust or identity-based segmentation) delivers segmentation without requiring re-architecture. Security teams can isolate workloads in a network to limit the effect of malicious lateral movement. These controls can be categorized into three types: 🔹 Agent-based solutions: Software agents on workloads. 🔹 Network-based controls: Physical and virtual devices. 🔹 Native cloud controls: Cloud service provider capabilities. Benefits of Microsegmentation: ✅ Reduced attack surface: Gain visibility into the complete network environment without slowing development. ✅ Improved breach containment: Monitor network traffic against predefined policies and respond quickly to breaches. ✅ Stronger regulatory compliance: Create policies that isolate regulated systems from the rest of the infrastructure. ✅ Simplified policy management: Automate application discovery and policy suggestions based on learned behavior. Use Cases: 🔹 Development and production systems: Enforces separation between environments. 🔹 Security for soft assets: Adds security for confidential data. 🔹 Hybrid cloud management: Ensures uniform security policies across environments. 🔹 Incident response: Limits lateral movement and aids in understanding attack tactics. Incorporating microsegmentation enhances network security and protects against evolving threats in today's dynamic cloud environments. https://lnkd.in/esnCQr4M Stay ahead of the curve! #SecurityTipsFromTim

The rise of hybrid working has significantly expanded the attack surface, with endpoints, cloud-native applications and on-site devices all requiring robust safeguards. Organizations that still rely on siloed security tools are in a precarious position, as the visibility gaps between disparate solutions can hinder the ability to apply effective data governance and security policies at the granular level now required. This lack of unified visibility and control not only hampers the efficiency of attack detection but also slows incident response times when vulnerabilities emerge. This is where deploying solutions in a single stack network and security solution provides a streamlined approach. Many organizations, for example, rely solely on Software Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WAN). This produces security risks when deployed without a supporting cloud security architecture, like Secure Service Edge (SSE), bringing both together under the Secure Access Services Edge (SASE) framework and more specifically a single vendor SASE can deliver operational gains.

As we've hit the midpoint of 2024, it's crucial to take stock of the cybersecurity landscape. After weeks of deep diving into earnings calls, conferences, and presentations from the industry's giants, I've summarized the top priorities and debate points that will shape the rest of the year. There's no better way to get that read-through than by analyzing what the largest cybersecurity companies are prioritizing into year-end. Across these major players, here are the top themes/debate points for the rest of the year that I write about: 1) CrowdStrike: How will they develop a sustainable path to $100B, including what are their next growth drivers 2) Palo Alto Networks: How they have two more quarters to prove the platformization strategy 3) Zscaler: Uncovering their expansion into new growth verticals (featuring Darwin Salazar, MSc, for his in-depth piece on Avalor) 4) Okta: How they have a few more qtrs to build trust & accelerate growth into new areas of workforce identity (featuring some insights from Fatima Boolani) 5) Cloudflare: Their expansion to edge AI & network security/SASE 6) Datadog: I write about their new cloud businesses, including Cloud SIEM, Application security management (ASM), and cloud security management. A big thank you to Zack Allen, Yash Kumar, Vikram Varakantam, Prashant P. and Emilio E. for sharing their insights with me over the past month! My biggest observation across these large players is that: 1) More of these companies are focused on cloud data security and 2) They fight to own more security data from the SOC (a topic for my next report!) In the interim, read more in the piece: https://lnkd.in/ghP9Ffnc
