This is why I love to work on projects in #NorthernMichigan. Here you can see the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay, with the Leelanau Peninsula on the other side. A future home site on Old Mission Peninsula with this view at the bottom of the bluff. What is the bluff made of, you might ask? Well, it's made up of primarily cohesive (clayey) material, containing seams of silt and layers of sand, silty sand, and sandy silty clay, with some boulders from the surface down to approximately 3 feet. The topsoil consists of black organic peat, which is completely saturated in some areas by the groundwater that is seeping out of the slope from the area directly upslope from the bay, and is perched near the ground surface above the highly impermeable subsurface soils. #Landslide as a #hazard is usually categorised under natural disasters but human construction activities can also trigger landslides, especially if they involve excavation, grading, altering the natural slope of the land, removing vegetation, changing drainage patterns, adding weight to slopes with structures. All these can increase the risk of instability and trigger landslides. In all #constructionprojects in areas prone to landslides, geophysical survays need to be performed and based on the outcome the risk of triggering landslide during construction and later during the use of land needs to be addressed in the #riskassessments. This video shows how a landslide can actually cascade to a #tsunami.

🏖️ Groynes: Guardians of the Coast 🌊 A groyne, also spelled groin, is a rigid structure built perpendicular to the shoreline, extending from the beach into the water. Typically constructed of rock, concrete armor, steel, or wood, groynes are designed to interrupt the movement of sediment along the coast. The most common construction method involves using specified core fill, under layer, filter layer, and rock armor, tailored to geological and geographic conditions. Groynes are commonly used in erosion control to stabilize beaches and prevent coastal erosion. Their primary function is to trap sediment transported along the coast by waves and currents. By blocking this movement, groynes cause sand deposition on their updrift side. This accumulation builds up the beach, widening it and providing protection against erosion. COLUMBIA RIVER Along the Columbia River, continual erosion was causing the river bank to lose over 18” per year. For this homeowner, they were losing property and their landscaping so they looked for a soft armor solution to restore the riverbank. Additionally, several small springs were adding to the erosion and needed to be addressed to create a long-lasting solution. This area was of cultural significance as it was utilized by many Native American Tribes throughout history. An archeologist had to be on-site during construction to monitor and identify any significant historical items found. There was limited access to this site so all construction activities had to take place from a barge. Envirolok was the perfect solution due to its easy installation, slope stabilization, and quick vegetation. In combination, root wads were included to reduce water energy and promote habitat improvement. Hillslope gullies can be managed with a combination of low-cost runoff and erosion stabilisation structures and grazing management. Because hillslope gullies are more likely to have a high catchment to gully ratio, to be able to implement low-cost prevention and mitigation measures is important for landholders. Scottville grazier Carl Groocock is all smiles about stopping an actively eroding gully, regaining land as well as improving surface water management and infiltration rates across the paddock. This story shows how he halted the progress of a linear hillslope gully, about 15m wide and 0.8m deep, consisting of a series of actively eroding gullies. ✨Scouring of Bridge Pier✨ Below video is showing how the bridge pier failed due to scouring during floods and the same has been shown through simulation. ✨What is Scouring? Scouring is the process of erosion of soil or sediment around bridge foundations, such as piers and abutments, due to the action of flowing water, particularly during floods. Scouring can weaken the foundation and compromise the stability of the bridge. ✨Mitigation To prevent bridge pier failure due to scouring during floods, engineers employ various countermeasures, such as riprap (large stones) around the pier base, installing scour monitoring systems, and using different foundation designs that minimize the impact of scour.

Brynderwyns update: Great progress is being made on all the work happening across State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills north of Auckland—there's now less than one month of the full closure to go and roadworkers are close to completing the major excavation work. The focus is now on using retaining walls and piling to strengthen the downslopes (the underside of the road near the edge) and other areas. These repairs aren't as prominent as the earthworks but they're just as important. Retaining walls and piling aren't the only stabilising methods we're using—as we've mentioned in previous updates, we're also using hydroseeding, which is when we spray a slurry of seeds, mulch, and fertiliser onto steep slopes to provide stability as well as helping to control dust, erosion, and sediment runoff. The two photos on the left below give you a look at the growth of the hydroseed mix. The top photo was taken earlier this month and the bottom photo was taken yesterday. You can see how quickly the hydroseed mix is growing, with the hillside in the bottom photo covered in green. We've used 185,000 kilograms of mixed mulch and hydroseed so far. The mix includes a variety of native species selected for their quick germination, resilience, and compatibility with the environment, including manuka, karamu, slender poa, and harakeke. The photo on the right shows how we're creating space along the road, where a roadworker is creating a shoulder space to the left of the existing road. Going forward, this gives roadworkers the space to fix issues alongside the road while you're still travelling on the road.
