[JAPAN BUILD TOKYO - Decarbonizing Buildings EXPO] In 2023, Yamaguchi New Shelter Industry Inc. participated in the cutting-edge construction technology exhibition “Japan GX Build - Green Building EXPO” in the optic of its goal of becoming a zero-carbon emissions company. This year, the exhibition was themed around decarbonization and carbon neutrality. In a society where decarbonization is of pressing importance, Yamaguchi New Shelter Industry Inc. is thinking and developing solutions utilizing membrane structures such as the function of fabric façades to reduce solar heat gains of a building. We will continue to propose membrane structures that “change the values of today’s architecture”, including efforts toward decarbonization, the use of green energy, and participation in a circular economy. Day 1 of CTBUH Conference 2024: New or Renew I was lucky to chair what I selfishly think was the best session of the day: Considering the Building Occupant. Andy Brahney from Ramboll reinforced the importance of occupant behaviour, reminding us that people and their attitudes are critical to realising the full potential of sustainable building technologies. I loved his framing of buildings as tamagotchis - in need of constant care and nurturing. Kathryn Tombling from BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd) also presented from a caring perspective - specifically the importance of designing housing to support occupants’ health and wellbeing. Florian Troesch from Schindler Group gave an update on their Metacore solution and what it means for efficiently accommodating many different types of occupants in a single building - whether new or renewed. Phil Obayda from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) spoke about the metrics of resilience, and what data we should collect on occupant use and interaction with buildings - among other things - to inform decision making about new vs. renewal. #CTBUH2024 Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH)

WHAT IS A SMART BUILDING? 🏢 Smart buildings are a constantly evolving practice of implementing, using and optimizing infrastructure to learn about and improve function, service, performance and utility of the built environment. Further, a smart building refers to the application of data to drive autonomous controls or building automation (that brings the intelligence), through integrated design which connects systems and processes to deliver improved health, wellness, human performance, comfort, efficiency, safety and security(3). The key here is that it’s not the technology itself, nor the data collected, that makes a building smart. What makes a building smart is how that data and technology is used to make improvements. By responding to data from a sensor (e.g., a measured CO2 concentration of 1500 ppm in a room), the smart building system can warn of potentially harmful air quality and respond appropriately and efficiently (e.g., alerting occupants to the air quality and increasing ventilation to that space until the CO2 concentration has dropped to 600 ppm)(4).
