This morning, I attended a Pride Month virtual event organised by the amazing team at myGwork - LGBTQ+ Business Community a global platform for LGBTQ+ professionals and students to connect, find jobs, and discover events in inclusive organisations. The event focused on "Navigating Social Media as an LGBTQ+ Person." The diverse panel explored the positive and negative impacts of social media and the opportunities for authentic self-representation. It was thought-provoking and left me reflecting on how we bring our authentic selves to our professional lives and the opportunities we might miss due to unconscious and conscious bias. Are we safe to be transparent? Do we need to be subtle to avoid closing off opportunities, or do those closed doors lead us to networks and opportunities founded on bringing our best selves to work? One clear takeaway for me, as a new business owner, is the importance of creating opportunities by being authentic. I have the backing of my employer to be my best self (I am my employer), and while I may lose some opportunities, those losses will lead to doors that I can't wait to open. Time will tell. I love the energy and buzz I get from delivering a session to an engaged and motivated group! Just delivered another of the Wellity packages, Embracing Inclusivity: Celebrating Pride Month. I know its not Pride month anymore, but the message is the same! Another, corporate client, big in transparent products shall we say! Starting a journey to expand their LGBTQ+ network and overall DEI offerings. Some lovely feedback! "The way the information was shared, with a perfect balance of personal stories, evidence based facts and figures, and then solid advice on how to be an ally and foster an inclusive workplace" "The story at the beginning to set the scene and the struggles encountered that helped me to better understand the issues and to want to be an ally even more!" "It was just such an informative session, well presented and the video at the end was amazing :)" "Fantastic speaker. So eloquent, knowledgeable and considered. Diversity and inclusion should be celebrated every day. We're celebrating Pride Month by wholeheartedly supporting the LGBTQ+ community's inclusion within the construction industry as well as supporting a fully inclusive and diverse workplace. Toolbox talks on the matter are essential. Speaking about inclusion in the workplace is critical for safe work environments, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community. Toolbox talks are a perfect opportunity to address this with persons at all levels of the company, and we have a few suggestions for what to talk about: ❤️ The history of Pride Month and why it's celebrated; 💛 An introduction and overview of appropriate and desired pronouns; 💚 Your company's dedication to the inclusion of all individuals; 💙 Your company's no-tolerance policy; and 💜 Resources for employees to learn more and/or access support.
