The JH Nordic Alliance is a community that engages in winter trails exploration at 'lower elevations'. However, we are also part of the larger community of winter outdoor enthusiasts, which includes backcountry alpine skiers. Although we engage in different activities, we all recreate on snowy public land. Considering the current snow pack, weather conditions this season, and the recent avalanche tragedy, we believe it is important to contribute to the conversation. Our hope is that by doing so, we can increase awareness and reach a wider audience. If you plan to go backcountry skiing this season, it is crucial to stay updated on the latest avalanche conditions. At current, the avalanche danger in the Tetons is Considerable but according to Bridger Teton Avalanche Center, "**A winter storm warning is in effect until 5pm tomorrow. Avalanche danger will increase significantly as heavy snow and wind arrive this afternoon.” ** Follow @btacavy for the most recent updates. Given the current snowpack, entering the backcountry should not be taken lightly. In this scenario, the best option is to remain calm and not let the excitement of powder fever overwhelm you, preventing you from making a well-informed decision. I just got back from a day of skiing at Breckenridge, Colorado. Wow, what a perfect day of beautiful sunshine and snow. Squeezing a day of skiing in between two high-level conferences felt silly yesterday afternoon as I pulled out my gear and loaded the truck. I knew I had a lot to do to recover from one conference and prepare for the next. So, I stuck to the plan and took a day to ski, which meant spending time outside and with a good friend. Now that I’m back home, I don’t regret it for a minute! Now I want you to do the same. Take that break, and I feel so strongly about it that is why I want 104 people to go on vacations to Cancun. I know what a good break can do to recharge your batteries. Whether the break is the ski lift back to the top to ski some more, a walk outside, or a trip to the beach, like Cancun. These kinds of breaks are a must. When I talk about one of my leadership tenets, Mission First. People Always. Guess who counts as a person? Follow the Rules and Signs: Pay attention to signs and markers on the slopes indicating difficulty levels, boundaries, and any hazards. Adhering to these guidelines can prevent accidents and ensure everyone's safety. 6. When data is incomplete, any analysis, subsequent business decision, and strategy can go wrong. Complete data facilitates fruitful investigations, clear conclusions, reliable strategies, and efficient implementations. Imagine wanting to go heli-skiing on a new mountain in Japan that you have never skied before but always wanted to go since you have read about it 15 years ago. You take advantage of your next business trip to Tokyo and want to give it a shot. You gather all the information available from the traditional sources you are using to prepare for your skiing trip, and you find out the mountain has 3 big sections, starting from the summit to the base, each section having a different difficulty level and snow conditions. You have complete information about the section on the top. You know it is a medium-difficulty slope, it snowed 4 feet in the last 48 hours, the terrain has no major bumps or moguls, and no ice could skew your plans. It seems like a good warm-up based on the data you have available. You have some information about the mid-section. You know that it has received the same amount of snow as the upper mountain, and you know there are 2 routes available, both much steeper than the upper mountain. You have information about the north route: it is a long run, has a bunch of fresh powder, there is a challenging tree section halfway through that will make the ride more fun, and it has some ice in the last part but is doable since is not that steep. You also know that the south route has conditions similar to the north one, except for a steeper and icier section in the last part due to sun exposure during the day. It’s easy to decide to take the north route. Sounds fun, is challenging enough and you are already warmed up, you like tree skiing, you know you can handle a little ice and it’s safer since you don’t want to risk the long icy section. You have limited information about the lower section though. You know it is the longest, not very steep and it has received the same amount of precipitation as the rest of the mountain. But you don’t have information about the routes available and the snow conditions. Will you decide to go on that mountain? ... to be continued ...

Skiing & Investing Imagine standing at the top of the mountain. You can see for miles. The sun is shining and clouds are floating by – it is beautiful. You look around. You can see the edges of jagged rocks under the surface of the snow. Trees litter the trails and paths. The wind blowing howls through your helmet. The anxiety creeps up. You realize, “I have to figure out how to get down from here.” Option 1: Ski around and meander down the hill. Option 2: Take an aggressive line down the face of the mountain. Option 3: Go somewhat in between, being aggressive in spots, enjoying the trees and views, while resting along the way. There is no right answer. You’re trying to get to the bottom and maximize your fun along the way. But there are risks. The rocks can damage your skis. The steep parts could make you lose balance and fall. The lower risk path might take longer. Individuals have many choices to get down the mountain in their financial lives. Fortunately, they can choose the right path for them. Within an investment portfolio, people can use multiple asset classes, rebalance portfolios, and take a long-term perspective while others may be short sighted. Individuals control the process. On the planning side, they can control taxes, estate goals, insurance options, and debt management. They can use strategies to maximize the take home amounts for compensation, business exits, and equity options. It comes down to choices. There are no wrong answers, only tradeoffs. For investing, it might be an aggressive portfolio, which comes with more volatility along the way. For planning, it might be saving less now, which increases the time horizon to reach the goal. Skiing down the mountain is going to be a challenge regardless. Swirling snow, foggy conditions or the person that just cut you off right in your path. Responding to these obstacles with a thoughtful plan and execution is the key to getting there safely and having fun along the way. #AskMarcum

The interest in summer mountaineering is bigger than expected! Like most Swedes, I've associated the Alps with skiing - referring to them as "ski resorts". Turns out the summer market is bigger than winter in many places. Hiking, climbing and mountaineering have become very popular, with Covid, documentaries and social media giving an extra push. I went skiing in a blizzard last week, and all I could think about was cash flow management during times of crisis.  Let me explain... It took me over an hour to go down a series of runs that usually take me about 7-10 minutes. I couldn't see in front of me because of the blinding snow falling sideways from the strong wind. I fell hard three times, and it took a lot of energy each time to get up and restart. I wanted to give up, but there was only one way to go: down. I wanted an easy way out, but nobody came by on a snowmobile and asked me if I wanted a lift to the base. My heart was pounding, and I had difficulty catching my breath at the 11,500' altitude. At one point, I even got scared that I would need the ski patrol to rescue me. And then... I started thinking how what I was going through is a lot like dealing with cash flow problems during the middle of a crisis in a typical small business. I remembered my skiing instructor, Matthias Moos, the best ski instructor in #Utah. He's like a good advisor who teaches you how to manage cash flow during good weather so you make it through when financial storms blow. Mathias taught me to focus on weight transfer, lean into my boots, and use the equipment to make the turn. In cash flow, this is equal to doing the fundamentals,  tracking your cash, and implementing your systems, even when financial storms are howling. Remembering to focus on the fundamentals, I went down an area I usually don't do because it takes longer. But in the storm, it was easier, and the longer route helped me conserve energy overall. In a cash flow crisis, things will take longer, and you will do things you haven't done before because that's what it takes to get through. Instead of getting to the next major trail, I focused on one turn at a time and on progress rather than the finish. During a cash crisis, you need to focus on a day at a time, weeks, and then the finish line. I am glad that I made it through that storm. I don't want to repeat it, but I learned a lot because of all I went through. I was soaked from the outside from the melting snow and from the inside from sweat. But It was a great experience. I'll forever be a better skier as a result. When a business experiences a cash flow storm and survives, it is always stronger on the other side.
