Another energy filled day here at the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) annual conference. Here are my some of my key takeaways from day 2… 1. Some fantastic work is happening to ensure that services can receive appropriate reimbursement for delivering more accessible service delivery models….watch this space 2. As highlighted in one of yesterday’s sessions, virtual is here to stay. Teams using virtual options to augment and enhance traditional service delivery models are providing more accessible rehabilitation with positive patient feedback and outcomes 3. There is a clear appetite to ensure that no patient is left behind and to use all resources available to achieve that goal.

🌟 Delighted to share our latest case report in BMJ Case Reports: "Left hepatic hydrothorax without ascites", co-written with Dr. Ulysse Voirol, Prof Julien Vaucher and Dr. Gaël Grandmaison. This report highlights a rare clinical scenario of a left hepatic hydrothorax. We aimed to: 🔸 Demonstrates an uncommon occurrence of hepatic hydrothorax in the absence of ascites, challenging traditional clinical expectations. 🔸 Provides comprehensive details on the diagnosis process, emphasizing the importance of considering hepatic hydrothorax in cirrhotic patients, even when ascites is not present. 🔸 Discusses the importance of palliative care and the use of a semi-permanent indwelling pleural catheter, addressing the unique needs of this patient group. This case report adds valuable knowledge to our understanding of atypical presentations of hepatic hydrothorax. https://lnkd.in/ejh9w-yB

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining a discussion panel at the Greek ILD Patient Forum (https://ipfgreece.gr/) alongside Maria Koulopoulou and George A. Margaritopoulos. The discussion revolved around the physiology of a lung disease patient, treatment and usage of oxygen therapy for ILD (George), as well the importance of viewing oxygen as a medicine that needs to be prescribed, dispelling some myths around its use and exploring different types of devices and forms of oxygen used (Maria). My input was on oximeters, which play a vital role in titrating oxygen supply. It's essential for both healthcare providers and patients to understand how to use oximeters correctly. They are indispensable tools in managing pulmonary fibrosis and other respiratory conditions, ensuring patients receive the right amount of oxygen when needed. I spoke about: - The importance of generating trends of readings as opposed to relying on absolute numbers from spot checks, and being familiar with one's normal/expected values - The importance of taking measurements with the same oximeter placement every time, - How and why oximeters produce different results than arterial blood gas measurements, - How factors like cold hands (why it's not enough to simply rub our hands for 5 seconds), motion artefacts and skin pigmentation affect their accuracy. The last point is crucial, especially considering the recent press release by the Department of Health and Social Care regarding the government's action to tackle ethnic and other biases in medical devices, aligning with similar efforts by the FDA and underscoring a global commitment to ensure healthcare is equitable. https://lnkd.in/dY2_dT_j #MedTech
