Builders just told us that costs are up an average of 3% vs. last year. However, one publicly-traded home builder just disclosed that their costs are down 6%. I look forward to digging in deeper on what is going on here. I assume that growing market share is bringing even more economies of scale to large builders. I think it is more complicated than that though.

A fun learning experience about asking all the right questions... THE CHALLENGE: For a particular client, they were struggling with too much space and a major cost cutting initiative to lower operating expenses. ACTION PLAN: This was for a large multi-location group where we supported a site performance evaluation on all sites, inclusive of the Head Quarters. The evaluation was to show that there were many weaker locations that could easily shut down and clearly return a lot of operating costs that were no producing. THE RESULT: We ended up consolidating 16 sites across the state of Florida and condensed the corporate office. The corporate office deal was struck with the Landlord which came from many questions on hours of conference calls with them and we knew it was on the market to be sold. I ended up finding out that they already had an agreement signed with the other buyer who was ready to take action on the building immediately, which led us to the deal that I had structured. Long story short, be inquisitive. Don't be shy to ask questions. Continuously aim to learn more. Value and experience will come from learning, listening and asking questions. Excellent to see the technology consultants coming together to raise the standards of this rapidly growing market. The #smartbuilding and #smartworkplace technology in every construction project is critical to the experience of all users, the management of the space and the sustainability goals that are so important today. Yet the design industry still considers technology too late(and sometimes not at all) in every project. Requirements are under specified, budgets usually TBC and vague soecifications chucked over the fence to contractors as CDP. No wonder so many opportunities for innovation are missed.
