From lab to field, we transform science in Innovation in Crop Science #ICS to deliver solutions to farmers being able to produce more with less and feed the world without starving the planet. When we believe in science we believe in possibility. When we do science we improve lives. And that must be celebrated! Last week Bayer | Crop Science hosted ICS 2024 across the world, our anual Scientific congress to highlight the science we do. I had the huge honor to lead 2 global sessions to showcase some of our Solutions on the farm and a Blockbuster project. It was also really special to organize 2 booths to talk about Advocacy and Women in Science #WiSE. But besides being part of the event’s organization, it was great to being part of the audience and join: - a Happy Science Hour about scientific communication with Sabine Boettger Righetti, Maria Guimaraes and Francila Calica; - a Bayer fellows session about the Future Horizons in Ag with Marcio Silva-Filho, Marcia Ometto Mello José and Ramiro Fernando Lopez Ovejero; - an amazing field tour at our Paulínia site; - a Picture a Scientist movie; - and enjoy really amazing presentations from my colleagues all around the world! Science is not finished until it is communicated. I am so glad that our scientists have decided to share what they do. How much I have learned! We really can do more together. At Bayer, many of my colleagues mentor graduate students in programs like our B4U Mentorship Program, and these 10 Ph.D. students at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln mentioned in this article. The mentor-mentee relationship works to prepare young scientists’ by providing discussion and training on industry careers and "soft skills" that go beyond technical achievements in the laboratory or in the field. Collaborative skills and effective work-life balance are among the focus for the program. Husker mentees in the 2023 class described their mentorship as “transformative” and “incredibly supportive.” Mentorship is an incredibly important commitment to the future, the future of agriculture and the future scientists who will lead our agricultural innovations. For myself, mentoring and leading teams is rewarding and inspires me to look at my own leadership skills more closely. I'm reminded of the moments and mentors early in my career who taught me life and technical skills that I still use today.
