“The real potential for military application of artificial intelligence is to empower our commanders — the men and women who lead our formations. And how do we bring the power of AI to bear to let them do three things: make more decisions, make better decisions and make faster decisions?” said Gen. James Rainey, Army Futures’ commanding general, at a recent Scale AI’s government summit. Rainey reflected on ways the military is adapting to the quickly evolving advantages and limitations posed by AI in modern warfare. “I don’t personally think we have a technology problem — I think we have a tech adoption problem,” he said. MILITARY AI TRUST ISSUES: The Pentagon is grappling with a significant trust deficit in its AI systems among military personnel. Despite advanced AI tools designed to enhance battlefield decisions, there's a notable lack of confidence from the troops meant to rely on them. Soldiers express concerns over AI's reliability and accuracy, particularly under the intense, unpredictable conditions of warfare. This skepticism extends to life-or-death decisions, where the stakes couldn't be higher.

GEN George, US Army Chief of Staff, recently stated the Army will reduce time spent on vehicle maintenance across the force with “modest changes” to maintenance intervals in the service’s fleet of vehicles. The saved hours will give Soldiers more time to train and spend with families. The Army’s top uniformed leader said the nation’s largest military branch must find ways to continually transform, including developing methods to better access and process data while enabling machine learning…..(https://lnkd.in/g7bFQ-Wd). “We have to ruthlessly prioritize how we use time and resources,” George said. China has unveiled the world's first AI military commander, now taking part in computer wargames at the Joint Operations College of the National Defense University. This AI has "supreme command authority" and can mimic the thought processes and decisions of real commanders in simulations. Unlike in the US, where AI is used to support human decision-makers, China's AI works independently within the lab. The AI commander aims to improve strategy and decision-making, particularly in situations involving Taiwan and the South China Sea. #China #AI #Commanders
