At 3:30 as classrooms across Florida grapple with the teacher shortage in new Miami based program is focused on recruiting. It's helping up and coming teachers fast track their career. Local 10s Annalise Garcia has details on this tap placed over 40 teachers in Miami-Dade classrooms after its first semester last spring. At the University of Miami we spoke to one of those teachers. Today she works here at South Miami Senior High School and her principal told us quote if this program keeps producing people like. Dade counties in good shape. Look over here to the board. The number one issue in education right now is the teacher shortage. Yeah, think about it. Think about as classrooms across Florida and the US experience a teacher shortage. A Miami based nonprofit launched to create a pipeline for people with bachelor's degrees to become teachers in an accelerated program called TAP. How do we bring biology majors, math majors, social science majors, people who have great content knowledge in their fields and are interested in transitioning the teacher? Accelerator program, better known as TAP, launched in 2023 at the University of Miami. It's now expanding to FIU and Miami-Dade College per spring of 2024. The way it works, A1 semester course is followed by field experience with a teacher, then a paid summer internship, then, once certified by the state, a guaranteed teaching position in a Miami public school in the fall. I can't think of a more important job to do than that of a teacher where you're you know for a fact, the time that you're putting into this is worth something. You got it. I'm not off. Hernandez is a product of TAP. Initially, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do exactly. She was a math and chemistry major at UM before she found the program. She decided to give it a try one year ago. Fast forward to today. She's a high school math teacher at South Miami Senior High. I really like what I do. I love my students. I love what I teach. Math is not easy, but. I hope my kids understand it, and that makes me really happy, Fernandez tells us. She encourages anyone who's considering a career changer has interest in teaching to give tap a try, even if you don't know anything about the profession. It's teaching you to become a teacher. It's making you a better educator. Whether you want to do it at the end or not. You don't have to come with any experience, so over at FIU and UM, you do have to be a student to sign up for tap. But at Miami-Dade, anyone can join as long as you enroll in the college 1st. And the deadline to do that? It's February 4th, we're in South Miami and all these Garcia Local 10 news.
