One of the challenges but also tremendous opportunities in affordable housing development and design is utilizing truly unique sites. I've been a fan of Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects [LOHA]'s work for a while. Their use of land in LA and southern California is really great. Check out this article about utilizing an out of place 19,000 square-foot triangular median. https://lnkd.in/gKzi2BE6

It’s great to have my article published in the Architects Journal today. Could a solution to the housing crisis also save our high streets? Thousands of new homes could be created from empty shops but we need to convince the public and planners about the benefits Full article - Architects' Journal: https://lnkd.in/ehw3Msum

This anachronism is part of the tradition of Roman-Greek aesthetic architecture, characterised by a fetishistic rhetoric of the symbolism of power since the 18th century. The freedom and independence of institutions are encapsulated in external walls with small fenestrations, as if they wanted to distance themselves from the outside world and the noise of the streets where citizens wander with their joys and sorrows, with closed walls as if they were diseased membranes of cells whose nucleus has been affected by the lack of oxygen. This are recommendations that would “advance the policy that Federal public buildings […] be visually identifiable as civic buildings and respect regional, traditional, and classical architectural heritage in order to uplift and beautify public spaces and ennoble the United States and our system of self-government.”

Plans for the impending restoration of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) 66 Portland Place headquarters in London have become clearer with the release of an amended proposal outlining the scope of work for the new House of Architecture project. Benedetti Architects will head the project, which was awarded in 2022 following a brief competition. The anticipated £58.8 million project will provide complete accessibility throughout all 28 levels of the 90-year-old Art Deco skyscraper while replacing existing fossil fuel-dependent systems to reach a net zero goal. Since 1970, the original George Grey Wornum design has been protected under a historic Grade II classification. RIBA says: "[The] House of Architecture brings together three critical areas of our work that need investment, and will deliver on improvements that are fundamental to RIBA’s ongoing mission." https://lnkd.in/dN4hv8Ke

So how much should planners and architects know about historic buildings? Can you tell Georgian domestic architecture from Victorian? One of our #CPD sessions at AMS Planning talks about the (sometimes) subtle differences that are obvious when you know. What do you think? (HBOs aren’t allowed to take part…they might get it wrong!) #heritage #georgianarchitecture #victorian No cheating by looking up my YouTube channel video on this subject!
