As we kick off #ClimateWeek, I'm thrilled to share the latest news from our team. Last week, we rebranded to Elemental Impact. Why the change? We're no longer just an "accelerator" - but a broader investing platform to support climate solutions at scale. 💡 🚀 This moment also marks an important launching point for our platform with a $100M Funding Program under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF). We've officially opened applications for projects. Phase I of this process will identify program eligibility, with Phase II capturing specific project details. What are we looking for? In short, projects that utilize commercially-proven technology and achieve 3 core objectives: reduce emissions, benefit communities and mobilize private capital. As Generate prepares to celebrate our 10th anniversary during New York Climate Week, we are reflecting on our decade of experience as a sustainable infrastructure investor and operator. While so much has changed during our firm’s tenure – from emerging technologies to landmark legislation – there are enduring characteristics of the #SustainableInfrastructure transition that Generate has oriented around since our inception. We are excited to highlight our reflections through our new video series. First up: The infrastructure transition requires bespoke capital solutions.  Generate was founded to solve a crucial problem: the capital markets weren’t financing infrastructure transition projects at the speed and scale necessary to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. Two days ago, we saw the the publishing of the Speed & Scale Tracker, an engaging visual presentation of our progress on the climate crisis. Here's what it taught me 📜👇🏽: It was helpful to take stock of what they thought was going well, and what they thought was going worst: 📈 What's going well: cars, solar + wind, batteries, electricity, project finance, venture capital 📉 What's going worst: coal + gas, methane, cows, forests, steel + cement, NBS, carbon removal This matches where we've seen the most private market interest. The challenge is how do we put our efforts into sectors that aren't as financially "pretty." Government subsidies and philanthropic dollars are crucial for this. The challenge here is for founders to build well-run enough copmanies tackling big enough problems for philanthropies to fund and governments to support once de-risked. 💰 If recent legislative progress has shown us anything, it's that people ARE paying attention, and we need tools like this to focus our attention. Before July 31st, we have the opportunity to drive Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's #MassLeadsAct, a transformative economic development package including a $1 billion climatetech investment over 10 years, across the finish line. Businesses and environmental advocates alike are energized by this once-in-a-generation opportunity to claim the climatetech industry for Massachusetts' economy and people. ELM's Elizabeth Turnbull Henry and Associated Industries of Massachusetts' Brooke M. Thomson published a joint op-ed in the Boston Business Journal about how this legislation will not only drive our state's innovation and competitiveness, but also expedite our clean energy transition and grow our green economy. Our state is poised to become the global hub for climatetech, but it is now up to our Legislature to make that a reality. Let's seize this opportunity - both for climate and for business. A few weeks ago, I organized and moderated a #sustainablerealestate webinar for SDG Week! I was joined by Courtney Flood, CPA, Ross Farris, and Steve Dulmage, from Windmill Development Group and Urban Equation. Three major points pulled from our discussion: (1) The focus on sustainability extends beyond just minimizing the carbon footprint to include enhancing the social and economic aspects of the community. Through the #oneplanetliving framework, Windmill and Urban Equation aim to balance the environmental, societal, and economic needs to provide healthier, happier spaces for people to live and work. (2) Financial investment mechanisms such as the One Planet Living Fund are integral to promoting sustainable real estate projects. Through innovation and community partnerships, this fund ensures that all Windmill projects adhere to sustainability while still offering competitive financial returns. (3) For students and young professionals, a valuable quality to possess is curiosity and the willingness to ask questions. It's important to embrace not knowing everything and to not fear appearing "uninformed." Rather, ask questions and show curiosity!
