Singapore and Malaysia are building the new “Shenzhen”: In an era of tariff wars and onshoring narratives, Regional Mega Hub is the right path. Why ? Infrastructure, labor availability, investments attraction, innovation readiness …Often one single country/region does not own ALL the ingredients for economic success recipe. Therefore it calls for meaningful alliances and scale effets to compensate the missing pieces. Most westerners are unfamiliar with the region of Johor, pretty much like two decades ago no one heard of Shenzhen which turned out to be the epicenter of manufacturing and innovation for China and beyond. Special mention for manufacturers reconfiguring your global #supplychain: Johor is already known for food processing industry with notable global players like Netslé, Danone… The right path is rarely the path of least resistance though — entrepreneurial determination and political vision do matter, especially at crossroads. Let’s remember this name for now and see for yourself five years down the road.

The establishment of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) between Singapore and Malaysia is a defining moment for Southeast Asia’s economic future. Beyond the headlines of job creation and investments, this collaboration signifies a deeper commitment to shared prosperity and connectivity. By fostering innovation, seamless cross-border mobility, and attracting high-value industries, the SEZ sets a benchmark for how regional partnerships can drive long-term economic resilience. The proposal for a high-speed rail connection only amplifies its potential, integrating talent and resources more effectively than ever. For me, this isn’t just about economic gains; it’s about creating a region where opportunities transcend borders, where businesses flourish, and where people thrive.

The announcement of a joint special economic zone (SEZ) between Malaysia and Singapore in Johor marks a significant step in strengthening cross-border economic ties. By focusing on key sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, tourism, and energy, this initiative aims to attract high-value investments and create 20,000 skilled jobs within five years, which aligns well with both nations’ long-term economic goals. I believe this collaboration could serve as a model for other nations looking to strengthen economic ties and invest in shared infrastructure projects. It will be interesting to monitor how this project evolves, especially its impact on cross-border traffic and its potential to position the Johor region as a key economic hub in Southeast Asia. Malaysia and Singapore on Tuesday finalised plans to develop the much-touted Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) after multiple delays, setting the stage for what Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described as a "unique" initiative centered around one of the world's busiest land crossings. Anwar and his Singaporean counterpart, Lawrence Wong, witnessed the signing of the agreement at the end of the two nations' annual leaders' retreat hosted by Malaysia. The deal was initially set to be signed last September but was postponed twice, including in December when Wong had to go into quarantine after being infected with Covid-19. Modelled after the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the JS-SEZ aims to ease the movement of talent and goods across the Causeway and enable swift capital flow from Singapore into Iskandar Malaysia and Pengerang in Johor's southern and eastern regions. The Johor state government estimates around US$6 billion in capital inflows annually over the next six years through the JS-SEZ, offering ample land, resources and potentially talent to Singapore-based corporations seeking to expand beyond the expensive and land-starved financial hub. https://lnkd.in/gdr-Z-Fu

Just a couple of weeks into 2025 and we already have one of the biggest FDI developments of the year. 🏭 The new Johor-Singapore special economic zone (SEZ) is a juggernaut. 4x bigger than Singapore; 1.5x bigger than Shenzhen; almost as big as the whole of Dubai. Its Singapore+1 proposition and incentives package are equally compelling. 🟢 But cross-border SEZs struggle to live up to expectations. Cooperating along border lines takes leadership and mutual trust; challenges abound, particularly when it comes to two countries with very different governance models and at different development stages. ❓Plus, it's puzzling how fiscal incentives remain at the heart of new SEZs as the 15% global minimum tax is being rolled out – and both Singapore and Malaysia are implementing it (!!) My take on this latest development with insights from Tractus's Udai Panicker, Christopher & Lee Ong, a member firm of Rajah & Tann Asia's Jennifer Lee and AsiaBIZ Strategy Pte Ltd's Lawrence Yeo. #FDI https://lnkd.in/edVkxCNT
