GAIL (India) Ltd. has accelerated its goal of achieving Net Zero in Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions from 2040 to 2035. This significant step forward underscores GAIL's commitment to India's sustainability targets and mitigating climate change impacts. But what exactly are Scopes in emissions? The GHG Protocol classifies an organization's emissions based on their source: 1. Scope 1 Emissions: Direct emissions from company-owned or controlled sources. In other words, emissions are released into the atmosphere as a direct result of a set of activities, at a firm level. Examples include company vehicles, on-site fuel combustion and manufacturing processes. 2. Scope 2 Emissions: Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the company. Although these emissions occur at the facility where the electricity is generated, they are included in the company's carbon footprint because the company uses that energy. 3. Scope 3 Emissions: All other indirect emissions in a company's value chain. This includes upstream and downstream emissions such as purchased goods and services, business travel, employee commuting, waste disposal, transportation and distribution, and use of sold products. As a leading player in natural gas transmission and marketing, GAIL's move highlights its serious approach to sustainability. However, achieving this target remains challenging. And to bring India's total emissions to zero by 2070, we must also address Scope 3 emissions as emissions along the value chain represent the biggest GHG impact. This effort requires the dedication of all major businesses and individual citizens.

Few points from the budget that stood out for me - ☀ Taking Renewable Energy to the Common Man - with the resolve to electrify over 1 Cr households using solar power, the budget has taken another step towards making renewable energy accessible to every citizen in the country. This initiative will also provide a fillip to entrepreneurs working in the field of affordable renewables. 🚙 Sustainable Mobility is the need of the hour - the budget allocation of ₹2,671 crore for FAME III outlines the strengthening of the electric vehicle ecosystem. By supporting manufacturing and charging infrastructure, the budget supports greater adoption of electric buses for public transport. infrastructure. 💡Support to Environment Friendly Alternatives - To reduce carbon emissions, the Govt. has mandated the blending of biogas with compressed natural gas (CNG) for transportation and piped natural gas for domestic use. Financial assistance will be provided to support the procurement of biomass aggregation. This will encourage farmers to participate in the bioenergy supply chain, thereby creating a sustainable and profitable model for agricultural waste management.
