"Tough Times Don’t Last, But Tough People Do: My Cold Calling Journey" When I read Robert H. Schuller quote , “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do,” I had no idea how true that statement would be in my own life. Let me tell you the funny start of my career—at my first (and only!) job interview, I applied for a back-office position. But guess what? They hired me as a Field Sales Executive for cold calling. 🤦♂️ Yup, I didn’t even want to do sales! At first, I wasn’t thrilled about the idea of cold calling and meeting over 100 customers a day. It was tough, really tough, especially since we were paid only on commission. That means no sales, no money. 💸 For a newbie, that’s a nerve-wracking way to start a career. But slowly, I realized how powerful sales could be and what opportunities it could open. 🌟 Fast forward 18 years, 14000 Retail clients acquired, 6 International Insurance Awards, 4200 Sales Executive trained. I can confidently say that decision to stick through those challenging times made me who I am today. Now, I train entrepreneurs, insurance agents, and senior managers on how to use cold calling to unlock untapped business. Cold calling built my confidence and gave me the ability to sell anything! So, if you’re struggling in your sales journey, just remember—tough times will pass, but the lessons you learn will stay with you. Integrity and car sales consultants go hand in hand right? Said no one ever 😂 ... The more commonly used labels are words like sleazy, slimy, slick, dodgy, pushy, high pressure etc. 🤦🏽♂️ ☝🏽 That is what most people thought of me at face value The way my role was perceived made this award (in the pic below), that much better to receive. Amongst 1000+ employees at the time, I was awarded the Quarterly then Annual Integrity award which forms part of PWA's core values (G.I.F.T) and was so grateful. 🙏🏽 To be honest, I didn't truly understand what it meant at the time and for the most part, I was just guessing when it came to communicating that I cared about what my clients needed. 🤷🏽♂️ I mean... if you were to hear from a 'sleazy car salesman', "I care about what you need" and nothing else, that obviously isn't going to build much trust. I'm sure consumers would initially perceive this as the sales professional just saying what they want to hear. 🙄 So why am I sharing this? There are SO many sales professionals in the industry that have strong morals, integrity, good hearts and genuinely want to help people whilst providing great service however, we don't always have a proven process to communicate our value effectively. Until I came across Ryan & SWISH, it was mostly trial and error when communicating value and I leant on my 'people skills' to build rapport. Thank you for winning that MBAu tender mate 😅 Don't get me wrong, my leaders at the time had such great success in their career and passed on great knowledge. However, you can't expect every leader to have frameworks and a broken down, teachable system to their success that can be adapted to every member of the sales team and their different personality types. Whilst I performed well, I just didn't have proven frameworks or systems in place for all the dialogue in between the "road to a sale" and I'm sure we've all heard that SYSTEMS BREED FREEDOM. Fast forward to now and I'm so proud to be a part of an organisation that lives and breathes Integrity. Integrity is literally in the name SWISH and we've been on a mission to change the perception of sales for this EXACT reason since 2014. 🙌🏽 We show how people to tell their TRUTH better and don't leave people in the industry thinking that sales "just isn't for them". I'm very proud of being part of the team at SWISH and this award is a constant reminder that I am where I'm supposed to be.
