#CCS The #Moomba CCS project in the Australian outback has started operations. A short Youtube PR-Video from #Santos gives an interesting insight into the impressive dimensions of CCS plants. It should be kept in mind, however, that these projects (like Sleipner, Snøhvit in Norway or Gorgon in Australia) are comparatively simple, as only the CO2 is captured from the natural gas which was produced on site. CO2 is still generated when the natural gas is burned by consumers. This and most other CCS projects in operation do not decarbonize natural gas, but merely the extraction process (scope 1). Simply choosing gas fields with low CO2 content would achieve exactly the same thing. https://lnkd.in/eJJZ7KA8

It’s an exciting time for the clean energy industry in BC! Generate 2024 is a great opportunity to join us as a sponsor, speaker, exhibitor, attendee and to discuss important issues related to the BC Hydro’s Call for Power and our province’s clean energy future so that we bolster our ability to attract new and increased investment, cultivate meaningful partnerships and create economic opportunities in our province while taking climate action. Clean Energy BC is Business and First Nations communities clean energy partnerships delivering affordable, environmentally-responsible, clean energy. Clean Energy BC and its members are in the right sector, in the right place, at the right time, with the right mission. CEBC Executive Director Kwatuuma Cole Sayers : “All the factors are in place to ensure our sector has the wind at its back and is ready to make a significant impact and deliver 3,000-gigawatt hours per year of renewable energy in clean electricity by 2030. Over the last fifteen years, our members have been building clean energy projects all over the world. We are a team that’s been preparing like athletes for the Olympics — and the moment has finally arrived to skate out onto the ice. We’re ready, and we’re excited. We’ve had our eye on this moment for a long time; we know we can be successful. As an association and a sector, we focus on producing clean electricity — providing electrons into the grid so that other economic sectors have more access to clean energy to meet their ESG targets. All these industries are crucial to the economic health of British Columbia, so our mission is to help assist them in this energy transition.” Register here: https://lnkd.in/g3S-wCVz

The way the question is framed (see link to event): "Should we continue to produce oil on the Norwegian continental shelf - or should we leave reserves lying around? If Norway stops producing - will that lead to a decrease in consumption or that other producers will take over the market?" it appears that you are forgetting to include 'scope 3' in the discussion and decision making.... Assuming you will (as always) conclude that oil is better produced by Norway, then please also consider how Norway will ensure that the waste of the exported products (CO2) is reduced to net zero on time. For example: - will you sell to anyone? - are there requirements for responsible use? (CCS and/or CDR) - are the necessary assurances in place (eg conditions in contracts, policies in the country to which oil is exported) that make it credible that the waste is dealt with responsibly (recovered at source or from atmosphere and stored permanently)? - when will you stop exporting to countries that do NOT have responsible use (CCS, CDR) regulations in place? On our way to Arendal 🚂☕️ Arendalsuka - a meeting place to discuss the opportunities and challenges for the society we all play a part in. What will we do there? ✅ Discuss the future of oil production in Norway; https://lnkd.in/ePk-UXmc ✅ Have a dialogue on how to make our energy production more sustainable; https://lnkd.in/eu-c6tcZ ✅ And most importantly; meet people and listen to their viewpoints. Can we find solutions together? It is really the only way. Arendal - here we come!🚂

Chair of Energy for a Secure Future - keen to advance a new conversation on #Energy, resilient communities at home and abroad, reconciliation, infrastructure, and innovation.
This is an interesting conversation and one line struck me: "“We move a third of natural gas across North America. When the penetration of renewables increases in a State, natural gas demand for power generation also increases. Because you need to be able to firm up that intermittent source of energy.” This is certainly true for Canada where the backstop for intermittency for renewables from Alberta to Ontario is natural gas plants (Quebec with its big hydro dams is the big exception). I've also heard this from leaders in other countries - natural gas is important to country pursuit energy supply diversification, emissions reduction and renewables integration in particular. This point was made by the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan - IEEJ representative on Energy for a Secure Future recent webinar "Can Canada Deliver". We need to pay attention. #energy4people #energyaffordability #energysecurity https://lnkd.in/eK4aD6hD

Excited for #IPF2024 #IPFConf next month! The U.S. recently achieved a milestone with the completion of the South Fork Wind project by Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) and Ørsted. Last month, New York also awarded contracts to two struggling offshore wind projects, signaling a commitment to bolstering the industry amidst challenging economic conditions. This highlights the importance of offshore wind in creating local jobs, driving supply chain investments, and fostering large-scale clean energy generation. Several states will play a pivotal role in the Biden administration's aim to deploy 30GW of capacity by 2030. Despite challenges like high interest rates and supply chain constraints, positive developments abound. The launch of the country's first two utility-scale offshore wind projects signifies significant progress. Wind turbine manufacturers are reporting improved profits, and contract revisions in New England signal a market shift. However, uncertainties persist regarding industry recovery and costs. Long-term certainty hinges on consistent project construction and leveraging existing infrastructure investments. Looking forward to gaining insights at #IPF2024 in New Orleans next month! https://lnkd.in/e8jsk_-t #RenewableEnergy #OffshoreWind #floatingoffshore #CleanEnergyFuture Oceantic Network Liz Burdock
