Hot off the press! Call to action. For many of us, our “why” has to do with making a difference. And yet there is remarkably little discussion of purpose within educational contexts and professional roles. It’s time to change that. Thank you Society of Women Engineers for the opportunity to share results of 3M sponsored research against the backdrop of our own journeys - Prof. Amanda Diekman and I love telling the story of how a cold call resulted in a heart warming discussion and a collaboration across fields to understand how to increase belonging in STEM - how to help students persist in their #education and pursue STEM #careers. “Why?” Our research showed that students who considered purpose reported more motivation and belonging in STEM and less stress – and this effect occurred across gender and race.
