Without a healthy dose of skepticism and humility, the most dangerous words in medicine are: “in my experience”. Experience creates an “Illusion of Understanding”: “I’ve never had a complication treating this rare disease with X”. “Buckles are a waste of time. I’ve had great results without them”. “I don’t believe the results of this clinical trial because my first 10 patients did not respond”. Relying on human “Associative Thinking” with certitude, and dismissing other opinions is “Epistemic Arrogance” and a flawed “Illusion of Understanding”. #medicine #retina #ophthalmology #optometry
