If you're a #QuantitySurveyor or #Estimator that wants to progress in your career in 2025, the one thing I would invest in this year is the following: COMMUNICATION SKILLS 🗣️📢 The most technically advanced quantity surveyors and estimators can be some of the most overlooked for promotions because of limited abilities to communicate. Whilst you may think you can communicate sufficiently, there is a spectrum. Sometimes it requires putting yourself into uncomfortable situations, shouldering your way into conversations, pushing for a chance or opportunity to showcase your soft skills. But you must have them, in order to showcase. Every time I'm engaged on a Senior Assignment in quantity surveying or estimating, clients always demand the following: 📍Excellent at client engagement 📍Strengths in business development 📍Strong negotiation skills 📍Good network of clients or subcontractors 📍Expert reporting capabilities 📍Abilities to develop rapport with your team Whilst this may not come natural to you, I would highly recommend finding a mentor, buddying up with someone you look up to, book yourself into a course, read more, speak to people when you're feeling uncomfortable. Whether that's in the coffee line, the dog park, the cinema, on the bus etc... Communication is a muscle. The more you practice, the better you'll get. Insert is a picture of me, speaking with 150 quantity surveyors and estimators in Brisbane. ☝️ Something that filled me with fear, even though you might think it came natural 😅

Versatile roles of Quantity Surveyors The role of quantity surveyors in the construction industry is well-established and widely recognized. They are essential for managing costs, preparing tender documents, administering contracts, and ensuring projects are completed within budget. However, the skill set of quantity surveyors is not confined to construction alone. Their core competencies—such as financial acumen, contract management, risk mitigation, data analysis, and project oversight—are highly transferable and applicable to a range of other industries. By exploring their potential contributions in various sectors, we can appreciate the versatility and value that quantity surveyors bring to diverse professional environments. Through detailed examination and examples, this article demonstrates how quantity surveyors can transition into roles in real estate, financial services, manufacturing, consultancy, information technology, education, government, environmental sustainability, healthcare, and transportation. This broadens their career prospects and impact. #construction

I agree with this to a certain extent—communication skills are undoubtedly one of the most crucial aspects for any individual, department, or business. However, the reason estimators and technical professionals are often overlooked goes beyond just communication. Many estimators are taken for granted because they see little to no scope for career growth in their roles. Additionally, company policies and management often fail to truly appreciate their contributions, despite the fact that they are the backbone of any business and an integral part of the operations team. I have personally experienced situations where false promises and favoritism affected career progression. This is why managers should take responsibility for their employees, regardless of the department, and ensure fair treatment, equal opportunities, and justified salaries and benefits. Strong communication skills can certainly enhance career prospects, but organizations must also recognize and reward the hard work of estimators and technical professionals. #Estimators #QuantitySurveyors #CareerGrowth #FairOpportunities

How many times have I written the words Quantity Surveyor in the last 21 years? It’s like one of those sweet jars, full of little sweets and someone says, count them. Time 🕰️ is an interesting measure. 21 years ago, some of the people that I will be speaking with today were in nappies when I began my Headhunting career. Some were just starting school, others, leaving school, etc. There are many who had spent a decade working for various businesses, main contractors, little contractors, housebuilders and other sectors. Like an army of ants 🐜 appearing and working to rise through the ranks. Some of those QSs are MDs and Directors of Commercial departments now. I love helping people shape their careers and lives. If you’re a QS, no matter which end of the spectrum, I’m someone that you can trust to be in your corner and do my best to help navigate your career for the better. I understand your role and the importance of how you manage yourself and others. Let’s start talking, particularly if you live around the M3/M4, because that’s where I have current requirements for good QSs. Niche, High-End, Luxury, Bespoke for one and also Main contracting experience, NEC or JCT for another. Make sure we are in touch now because most of the people I move into better jobs aren’t looking for a job. SeniorQS.co.uk

Thinking aloud: Why are Quantity Surveyors (QS) not always looking at the opportunity to transition into executive roles, such as Business Development Manager, as they only focus heavily on technical responsibilities. I believe with their strong financial, cost management, and market analysis skills plus some Business strategy skills, QS professionals are well-positioned to drive business growth. By shifting focus from purely technical tasks, they can leverage their expertise to secure new opportunities and lead strategic initiatives. And I believe that, exploring these roles can significantly enhance their career impact. Quantity Surveyors should not remain confined to traditional QS duties…

As you progress in your career as a Quantity Surveyor, there will be opportunities to specialise, perhaps in the type of projects you work on or the type of support you are able to offer. Some Quantity Surveyors, for instance, offer specialist support on property taxes, project funding, or sustainability. #QuantitySurveyor #Construction #ConstructionCareers #CareerDevelopment
