Japan is one of the most researched countries in the world when it comes to tsunami risk, but could there be more to learn from its tsunami monitoring and mitigation? In their latest whitepaper with Dr Anawat Suppasri from Tohoku University, the Gallagher Research Centre explores changes made following the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, as well as the alternative sources of tsunami that insurers should consider. Reflecting on the year since the devastating earthquakes in Turkey, we commemorate the resilience of the affected communities and honor the memory of over 50,000 lives lost. These seismic events underscore the urgency of understanding and preparing for earthquake risks. Join us in a webinar to discuss the Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Sequence, learn from our risk modeling insights, and explore updates to our Europe Earthquake Model. Read our new blog post " The 3rd of April Earthquake in Taiwan - Navigating the Aftermath: Insights from Taiwan’s 2024 Earthquake" on FichtnerConnected. On April 3 of this year, the island of Taiwan was shaken by the strongest earthquake since 1999. In our new blog post, our colleague Markus Schüller gives a brief overview and other information on areas of our day-to-day work, but also talks about where and how he experienced the earthquake as well as shares some personal lessons learned. As most of you will remember from the international media reports, the main earthquake occurred on the 3rd of April 2024 registering a magnitude of 7.4, which made it the strongest #earthquake in Taiwan in the last 25 years. For Markus personally, it was probably the fifth or sixth earthquake that he has noted since his arrival in #Taiwan in May 2020. The epicenter was located 16 km south of Hualien City on the east coast of Taiwan. Since the east coast drops off very steeply, the risk of a tsunami on this coast is small and the maximum wave height reported was 1 m at Hualien. The last earthquake in Japan that happened few days ago with magnitude of 7.4 which is considered as enough to vandalize entire of durable buildings except that in Japan it did not. This can only explained that they had built them to perform full resistance to such magnitudes which are potential. Unfortunately, there is still subconscious about the necessity of seismic design of buildings in my region even though the last devastating earthquake in Turkey. If not addressed, this situation will have significant consequences. #Earthquakes #Seismic_Design #Structural_Engineering

THE GREAT LISBON EARTHQUAKE OF 1755: ¿THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DISASTER IN THE WESTERN WORLD? In the context of a conversation we had a few days ago, I once again found myself reflecting on the significance of the major disaster caused by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and why Its implications invite us to classify this historic event as one of the most important earthquake/disaster ever lived in the Western world. The arguments supporting this assertion are not related to the magnitude or level of devastation caused by the earthquake itself which was already considerable. Rather, what we are suggesting to is related with the profound cosmovision impact and paradigm shift that this disaster brought in the context of the Enlightenment, and the deep DRR conceptual changes it wrought upon 18th-century Europe. About this intriguing topic, I would like to share a brief note I published a few months ago: https://lnkd.in/dhYc33at #DisasterExpoEurope2024 #DisasterXEU

The Telecommunications Forum is taking part in this year’s three part NEMA exercise, Rū Whenua, which explores how New Zealand will respond to a significant Alpine Fault earthquake. As the Sector Coordinating Entity for telecommunications, the Forum is heavily involved in ensuring telcos plan for, manage and recover from major events such as floods, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunami, climate change and yes, even space weather.
Today NEMA and 60 other agencies are taking part in the first day of Exercise Rū Whenua. The exercise based on an Alpine Fault earthquake scenario will test New Zealand's arrangement for responding to and recovering from major earthquake with widespread impacts. This exercise is taking place over three main days - Today, the 26th of June, and the 10th of July. Read more about the exercise here: https://lnkd.in/gvJ-j5gr

to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through the continuous growth and high satisfaction of people, companies, and society.
The BIG earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck the Hokuriku area of Japan in New Year's day of 2024. In addition JAL plane and Japan Coast Guard plane JA722A collided at Haneda Airport, Tokyo and burst into flames in 2nd Jan, 2024. I would like to express my condolences to everyone involved. The JA772A plane was damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake once in 2011, but although it made a miraculous recovery, it ended its life on a flight to the Hokuriku earthquake area. See more at the link: https://lnkd.in/gua5ibS6 Also US Government said to Japanese people that 'offered our full support to the Government of Japan' or 'to assist our Japanese friends'; ONLY USE THE TERM:'assist' or 'support' in case emergency situation is occurred in Japan market.
