As the devastating earthquake in Taiwan reminds us of the unpredictable force of nature, it also underscores the importance of ongoing research and preparedness. In risk management, preparedness also means being ready to leverage existing research to highlight possible changes in seismicity over time. By analysing historical data and patterns, we at AXA XL can: - Produce maps showing "short-term higher-than-average" seismicity rates (left plot) to guide our underwriting decision-making in every underwriting year, and - Simulate the future evolution of the earthquake sequence (right plot) to better form our risk management strategy. While earthquakes remain inherently unpredictable, our efforts to uncover potential trends and indicators offer hope for better preparedness and mitigation strategies in vulnerable regions. Safer communities and infrastructures in earthquake areas City planners, developers and community operators use different types of seismometers and related data for disaster risk reduction in such areas. This ISO document provides guidance for developing, implementing and maintaining seismometer systems as a part of the infrastructure for disaster risk reduction in smart communities. The seismometer systems in this document can be used for the observation of seismic activity, such as earthquakes, micro-seismic motion and volcanic tremors, especially in seismically active areas.
