As the devastating earthquake in Taiwan reminds us of the unpredictable force of nature, it also underscores the importance of ongoing research and preparedness. In risk management, preparedness also means being ready to leverage existing research to highlight possible changes in seismicity over time. By analysing historical data and patterns, we at AXA XL can: - Produce maps showing "short-term higher-than-average" seismicity rates (left plot) to guide our underwriting decision-making in every underwriting year, and - Simulate the future evolution of the earthquake sequence (right plot) to better form our risk management strategy. While earthquakes remain inherently unpredictable, our efforts to uncover potential trends and indicators offer hope for better preparedness and mitigation strategies in vulnerable regions. Let's continue to collaborate and innovate in the pursuit of safeguarding communities against the impact of natural disasters. #EarthquakeResearch #CATModeling #TaiwanEarthquake #Preparedness

Safer communities and infrastructures in earthquake areas City planners, developers and community operators use different types of seismometers and related data for disaster risk reduction in such areas. This ISO document provides guidance for developing, implementing and maintaining seismometer systems as a part of the infrastructure for disaster risk reduction in smart communities. The seismometer systems in this document can be used for the observation of seismic activity, such as earthquakes, micro-seismic motion and volcanic tremors, especially in seismically active areas. 👉 "Following the #Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Sequence, national and global communities have expended an enormous amount of effort in an attempt to dissect and understand the events, and findings are already widely being published in scientific journals." "The investigations are ongoing due to the complexity of the #earthquakes, and at Moody’s RMS we strive to include learnings in our #modeling while being conscious that #models need to balance the intricacies of the events with the need to provide a useful and practical tool for the #insurance market." "Such modeling efforts are time-consuming and require all data to be available to truly reflect the nature of the #risk, but already we have gained important insights from the earthquake sequence for use across all model components that we will use to inform our future model." 📝 In a new blog, Laura Barksby looks back at the Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Sequence one year on, the data and insights emerging from these devastating events, and how risk modelers are working in partnership with organizations in #Turkey and across the globe, to ensure we learn from major earthquakes to build more effective models. As I learn more about the M 9.0 Cascadia Earthquake Scenario and M 7.2 Seattle Fault Earthquake Scenario, the more I think about the importance of pre-event and post-event situational awareness and informed decision-making. Besides, the recent M 4.8 New Jersey Earthquake is a reminder that earthquake preparedness is not just a West Coast problem but something that needs serious attention throughout the country. If you are in Seattle for the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's Annual Meeting, I invite you to visit our poster (#37) on Improving Situational Awareness and Decision-making and learn about Kinemetrics, Inc.'s commercial earthquake business continuity solution (#OasisPlus), which is a fusion of earthquake early warning and real-time structural monitoring. #Earthquake #EERI #AnnualMeeting #Kinemetrics

📢 The #MCAA Around the World Webinar Series is back! 📆12 January 2024 at 4 pm CET 🔹QuakeBridge: Science, Business, and Policy for Effective Earthquake Readiness The main objective of this event is to bring together experts from academia, the industry and policymakers to foster in-depth discussions leading to the definition of precautionary measures. We want to create a cooperative structure that proactively addresses the potential destruction brought on by earthquakes by utilizing the pooled expertise and assets of these three different sectors. The event aims to initiate discussions on how policymakers can regulate the implementation of sustainable techniques in both short and long-term earthquake preparedness plans as well as the business perspective of adapting them.
