I had a coaching call with a client yesterday. It was the last one of a prepaid package of calls. There will not be any more. The client had disappeared for months at a time and then would show up with the exact same problems we talked about on the previous call, having done nothing with the advice I had previously given them. They expressed doubts about their career, were stuck in a semi-toxic work environment, and were unable to describe the benefit of their work beyond a shallow, imaginary effect. (Reread that last bit and think about your work.) When they started talking about their problems at work, I stopped them with a simple question. 'What are the three objectives of a corporate security function?' They didn't know. Their career problem was rooted in that they didn't know what the fuck they were doing or why. It gets worse. They bought a Lifetime Subscription to my online courses (back when I offered that deal) and so have had access to all my training for a couple of years now. They've done none of it. I cannot help people who will not help themselves. You don't improve your career by osmosis. I'm good, but I'm not that good. If you're stuck, miserable and frustrated, but you cannot answer the question I asked this client, you need to do three things. 1. Stop bullshitting yourself. 2. Stop bullshitting others. 3. Learn your trade. 4. Find your value (while maintaining 1 and 2). That means investing in yourself by engaging with people who know more than you, have more clarity than you, and will hold you accountable. Happy New Year everyone! WHAT I AM DOING THIS YEAR This year I am going to continue my research, training, and consulting activities in behavioral threat assessment and management, threat prevention, threat response, and tactical negotiation. I will also be continuing my expert witness services in these areas, all under my VGI Threat Consulting and Training brand. I am also going to focus on my other love, which is personal defense, under my new Tactical Academic brand. This will include behavior- and empirical-based best practices in avoiding, escaping, evading, and engaging offenders who have targeted you and it will be primarily based on ambush or sudden attacks where you lack the initiative. I hope to start some sort of podcast, YouTube, and/or Patreon site to discuss various theories and applications towards the goal protecting yourself and your loved ones in all of the above areas. WHAT I AM NOT DOING THIS YEAR I am scaling back on anything that is not related to the above. I will be 60 years old next month, so I want to focus the rest of my productive time and energy on the things that are most important to me: my family, my clients and students, and others who see the world as I do. WHAT I NEED FROM YOU I consider myself a lifelong student and learner of all the things I love. I am constantly learning and adjusting my craft as variables change and new contexts emerge. I am also a disruptor and I challenge the status quo to keep people honest and on-point. Most people either love me or hate me and I am good with that. If you are a connection, then I consider your input and expertise valuable and I would take any opportunity for mutual collaboration and gain. However, if you inject politics, ideologies, religion, or any other distraction while working with me, I will drop you like a bad habit. That being said, if you know me then you also know that I give everyone the benefit of the doubt. For starters, I am interested in collaborating or getting assistance on the following topics: 1. Best platforms to use (podcast, YouTube, Patreon, etc.). 2. Video and audio editing, graphics, and effects. 3. Resarch and best practices related to targeted violence (threat assessment, threat prevention, threat response, avoiding, escapting, evading, engaging, etc.). 4. Resarch and best practices relating to tactical negotiation (hostage, barricade, crisis and suicide intervention, etc.). 5. Resarch and best practices relating to combatives (body weapons, edged weapons, impact weapons, etc.) 6. I can have those conversations without bullshitting or looking as shady as Kim Philby in that TV interview.) I mean your ACTUAL value. The value of YOUR contribution. That might mean to the organisation or to the industry. If you just run around using frameworks and playbooks, your value is NIL. Anybody can (and does) that. There is nothing of YOU in that work. That means that you are eminently replaceable. Hate to say it, but there it is. It's time to put yourself back at the heart of your career instead of chasing other people's ideas of what your security career should be. The first step to increasing your personal value is understanding it, after all. It could start with your thinking. Thinking in new ways and communicating what we do differently is definitely an approach to consider. People have walked into incredible jobs just by opening their mouths and repeating what I taught them. They immediately stand out from the rest of the interviewees, all of whom are making the same noises. I recommend you do something different. Talk to me and let's see if I can help.
