📸 When whales appear in certain locations like the UK, they often cause a media spectacle. Shifting baseline syndrome has gradually changed what we perceive to be normal. The more this baseline shifts, the greater the risk of losing beautiful and vital elements of our natural environment forever. There is a mounting body of evidence of the severe threats posed by plastics to our planet and our health. Yet, plastic production is accelerating at an exponential scale, as sales in petrochemicals skyrocket. So, we want to make this point completely clear: The life cycle of plastics—from fossil fuel extraction to waste management— is detrimentally undermining the global efforts to combat climate change, protect ecosystems, and safeguard human health. Experts highlighted this heavily at the Plastics and Human Health Symposium hosted by the NYU Langone Health Center for the Investigation of Environmental Hazards (NYULH CIEH) during #ClimateWeekNYC. The symposium emphasised the emerging health risks of plastic exposure, including respiratory illnesses, cancers, and organ damage, driven by micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) and the tens of thousands of hazardous chemicals they release. Speakers called for urgent global action, including a binding treaty to curb plastic production, regulate toxic chemicals, and promote sustainable alternatives, emphasising that the health impacts disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, a key speaker at the event, made a stark declaration: Plastic recycling is a complete failure and borderline fraud. He reminded the audience that the fossil fuel industry is now turning to plastics as their next business model, as renewable energy takes over as the primary source of energy providers. This sobering assessment underscores the need for immediate and effective solutions to the plastic crisis: ❗️Reducing plastics use ❗️Redesigning for better, non-plastics products (like seaweed) ❗️Reforming legislation While the situation is dire, a glimmer of hope is on the horizon. The current negotiations by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on a global plastics treaty could be a significant step towards addressing this crisis. The Scientists' Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty is working to integrate science-based decision-making into the negotiations of such a treaty, sharing their expertise with delegates to the Plastics Treaty. The final round of negotiations on the plastics treaty, #INC5, is scheduled for the 25th of November to the 1st of December, in Busan. We’ve been fighting for four years to stop INEOS building Europe’s biggest plastics facility. And now, we’ve been forced to renew our legal fight yet again. Along with 14 other NGOs, we’re having to take another lawsuit to try and stop the company building Europe’s biggest plastics facility in the Port of Antwerp. We’re taking this action as the Flemish authorities have dropped their latest approved permit, which we challenged, only to replace it with a new one. The project’s purpose is to process fossil gas, primarily imported from the USA, to produce ethylene – a key component of plastic. It would greatly damage the health of nearby communities and wildlife species with its toxic emissions and plastic pellet waste. Plastics are an environmental issue, a people issue and a climate issue. We will keep fighting to stop INEOS building this facility. Read the full story here 👇

The annual dolphin hunt in Taiji (Japan) began on 5 September and will last until March 2025… 😰 Every year, hunting boats corral pods of dolphins and other small whales into a cove. These dolphins are either taken from their family to be put on captive display for different aquaria or killed in an inhumane manner that causes prolonged suffering and distress. 🐬 This is based on unscientific reasons that #dolphins are eating the fish but the reality is because more fishing effort is increasing taking more and more fish out of the ocean without allowing them to rest or reproduce. There are so many dolphins killed at one time that the cove turns red with blood. Captive demand gives a further excuse for these killings. So please don’t buy a ticket to any facility that holds #cetaceans captive! Buying a ticket fuels the captive industry and encourages the building of new marine parks and more dolphin and whale capture to fill those tanks! For every one dolphin in captivity, seventeen are slaughtered! 🩸 🐋 Dolphins and #whales are part of larger, complex ecosystems in which each individual plays an important role. If they disappear from the ecosystems, this will not only affect their own species, but also many other species including the fish that the Japanese fishing fleets wish to protect. They have an irreplaceable role in the marine ecosystem as our allies in fighting the climate and biodiversity crises. NOT GOOD if we consider treating women as a separate entity to men, then there is entitlement over them. this has to stop. NOW the fact that 14 states in the US have total abortion bans is putting women's lives and rights in jeopardy. the fact that women in Afghanistan have been reduced to chattel IN THE 21ST century and no government is working to change this is a terrifying sign of the times anything a man can do, a woman can do backwards and in heels! ACTION calling Gaia men who understand the benefits of including women in business, decision making and more to call out lack of fairness and invite women in - some men actively reduce to participate on panels without balanced female representation - call out boards without women representation - lookout for signs of mansplaining, interruption or eating into a woman's talking time - invite a woman to speak as a woman not as a woman having to act/speak like a man to be heard Boards with balanced gender yield 2-5% more profit, more climate friendly and sustainable solutions and a better working environment PS Now do the same for diversity! Friday was #InternationalWhaleSharkDay! Whale sharks are awe-inspiring creatures, not only for their size but also for their incredible role in our marine ecosystems. Shaping biological processes through their feeding habits and movement patterns, they help maintain the balance of the ocean’s ecosystems. Despite their peaceful nature, whale sharks face numerous threats. Their slow reproductive rate and long lifespan make them particularly vulnerable to human activities. Sadly, they’re often caught as bycatch, hunted for their fins, meat, and oil, and their habitats are increasingly under pressure. These majestic creatures need our protection now more than ever. What can you do to help? 🐟 Reduce your seafood consumption / choose sustainable seafood (to learn how, check out our post ‘Do’s and Don’ts of choosing sustainable seafood’). Removing the fish that sharks depend on for ourselves will obviously result in little or no food for them, but also the way we catch these fish can often be devastating for sharks. Every year, countless sharks are killed as bycatch. 🌿 Choose eco-friendly products. #Plastics and chemicals degrade whale shark habitats and harm marine life. 🗣️ Share the beauty and importance of whale sharks with others. Awareness is the first step toward their conservation. ⛵️Travel responsibly. If you’re lucky enough to see whale sharks in the wild, choose tour operators who prioritise the well-being of these creatures by following responsible tourism practices. 📢 We're #hiring! 🌊 Gallifrey is an independent ocean conservation not-for-profit that works collaboratively to address several topics such as, but not limited to, shark protection, deep seabed mining, plastic pollution and chemicals, overfishing, ocean litigation, gender equality in climate change issues, ecocide. 📲 We are seeking an ocean-literate social media nerd intern to assist our small team. Main tasks will be to regularly feed the Instagram and Threads accounts as a priority, Facebook account secondly, as per our communications strategy. TikTok and YouTube will be developed at some point.
