🚨 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁🚨 My basketball responsibilities are over for 23-24 as our season ended in the first round of the NEPSAC playoffs last night. Sometimes, the ball just won’t go in the basket and foul trouble on a small team is a killer. But man, am I proud of the way this group simply refused to give up. I challenged them in the locker room before the game to think about their ‘why’. Which person or people in their lives would they be playing for today. Many people, particularly these days in youth sports, talk a lot about individual statistics and accolades. “How many points did you score?” And not “How did the TEAM do?” I wanted them to find deeper meaning and motivation and pushed them to play for something bigger than themselves. There are always 5 people on the court at a time in the same jersey. There is always the support of teammates and coaches on the bench. I watched it ‘click’ for many of them in that moment. Stats do not matter. The team matters. The people that love and support you matter. The result wasn’t what we wanted, but it was an incredible feeling to watch them exert every ounce of energy they had for 32 minutes. To hear the girls on the bench encouraging their teammates the entire game. To watch them dive for every loose ball and fight for every rebound. Make the extra pass and pick up teammates when they hit the ground. Sports are so often a metaphor for life. Ups and downs. Highs and lows. This team went through it all. Together. And they became something bigger than themselves. They became a #team. And it was a privilege to be a part of it. Until next year. Basketball is a beautiful game, full of surprises, and that’s why we love this game so much. Now, as much as I appreciate those moments myself as a basketball lover, does it mean we have to settle on what’s being done, or can we give ourselves a chance to keep getting better? Because that’s what it is about: chance or luck, whatever you want to call it. But if you want luck to fall on your side, you can’t expect for miracles to happen often. You have to put your team in the best conditions possible, by making the right play, so that you have a higher percentage of success. Obviously Papagiannis’ long 3 that ties the game to go in OT is one of a kind, but before that highlight that owns the social media this Saturday night, isn’t there room for us to help our players make smarter decisions beforehand? - why would Yan Madar send a tricky pass in the paint with 9 seconds left in the possession, being down 1? In the best case scenario you score a 2 and get a 1 point lead, but give the other team the last possession to take control of the outcome… In this situation, it’s even worse because he turned the ball over on that pass. Talking about luck… - why would you go score a lay up on a fast break with 2 seconds left to be up 3, instead of running the clock around the court and eventually throwing the ball up high in the air for the last seconds of the game? Of course, one can say that it is unlucky, and it clearly is when you lose 105-110 after OT because of this, but once again, when you put all the chances on your side, luck will come your way more often. Both teams could and should have managed the last possessions better. MAVS IN 4!!!!! 🏀🏃♂️ I love basketball because it teaches me so much about life and business. Here are 3 lessons I've reminded of when I watch the game: 1) Teamwork makes the dream work: It's cliche, but it's true. Everyone has to play their part, from Luka shooting 3's to Daniel blocking the shots... We must acknowledge and leverage each other’s strengths. 2) Respect your opponent: Don't talk down on others. When interviewed, the players understand the other team could win the next game. They appreciate the competition that the other team provides. 3) Never give up: Historically, no team has come back from a 0-3 deficit, but anything is possible. I'm not sure what'll happen next, but I would bet every dime that both teams are going to give it their all.
