24 years. That's how old Sony Interactive Entertainments PlayStation 2 turned today. Managed to convince my parents to buy one since we were on the market looking for a DVD player, and this feature contributed to the platforms widespread adoption early on. In 2000, standalone DVD players were still relatively expensive, costing a couple of hundred dollars, with most standalone DVD players costing more than a new PlayStation 2. The inclusion of DVD playback functionality also probably helped the PlayStation 2 stand out against its competitors since Nintendos GameCube used proprietary hardware for its discs and could not play DVDs, and the original Xbox could play DVDs but required an additional fee for a DVD Playback Kit. This advantage helped the PlayStation 2 to become the best-selling video game console of all time, with over 155 million units sold. The PlayStation 2's ability to play DVDs was not the sole reason for its success, as it also boasted an unbelievably strong library of #videogames and other standout features like backward compatibility with PlayStation 1 games.

Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. has announced that their action RPG, Tales of Arise, has surpassed the impressive mark of 3 million copies sold since its release in late 2021. This puts the game ahead of Tekken 8's recent 2 million sales achievement, solidifying its success. Arise quickly became the fastest-selling entry in the Tales series, moving 1 million copies in its first week across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms. The release of its expansion, "Before the Dawn," last November likely contributed to the continued strong sales. While it's unclear how Arise compares to other recent Bandai Namco titles like Armored Core 6, its recent addition to Xbox Game Pass is expected to further boost its popularity and player base. This is indeed very interesting. I especially find it fascinating how different it is from the times when SEGA went this way (kind of) and how shocked we all were to see Sonic on non-SEGA hardware. I mean, the industry is definitely not the same, Microsoft being the giant that SEGA never was, it makes you wonder what the future holds for this sector, in addition to the massive layoffs that have been happening recently. Personally, I think this is for the best, but then again, it would leave only Nintendo and Sony in the hardware race, but for how long? Are we finally going to see a white-label hardware world as imagined by the 3DO back in the early 90s? Are we going toward a hardware-less world where everything is in the cloud and we only interact with a TV or computer like Stadia originally planned in 2019? Scary, but still fascinating!
