This is one of the coolest new AI use-cases I've seen in some time. researchers from Google DeepMind trained an AI Agent to play 3D world video games like No Man's Sky and Goat Simulator. It can essentially play like a human, controlling an avatar, building, resource gathering and other tasks. But it has been trained to "help the human players, not to win". That’s a good step further than the chat bot NPC dialogs and one in the good direction. With the right creative authorship systems it could lead to novel emergent experiences of AAA quality. Right now plugging GPT4 level models in a NPC with a bit of prompt context is just prototype quality. It offers a glimps at best but can easily be broken by players just like GPT4 itself because it’s fully open ended. Not what quality games need yet. The first challenge to tackle is how to curate and direct autonomous agents in a virtual world and how to make sure they stay cannon and can’t be hijacked by players while retaining the emergent experience enabled by AI. That’s the same requirement as any other game feature. “Make it player safe and exploit proof” But game developers have solved more complex problems than that in the past. E.g. Dialog trees They improved player agency massively in story telling. They also served as base for safe children chats. The main bottleneck is creating the branches and ensuring consistency. Natural language processing allows an autonomous agent (npcs) to navigate massive dialog trees and choose the right dialog branches based on the context. Just like safe kids chats but thousands of times bigger. The LLM can only answer through the curated pre-generated and curated dialog tree. With a big enough repertoire, the behavior and dialogs remain emergent within constraints. This allows designers to control the extent of possibilities but on a tree of possible outputs that is many orders of magnitude bigger than traditional dialog trees. This is an example of authorship systems for proceduraly pre-generated content. Another example could be path finding in a semantic diagram. Knowing the origin and possible end points (emotional journey or character arc), the inner state of the autonomous narrative agent can be updated by the LLM based on events experienced by the character. Basically, generative AI in games is just another procedural system. Game devs have dealt with tougher nuts to crack.
