Listening isn’t just about hearing the words spoken; it’s about understanding the context in which they are said. When I was 16 I was excited to master the art of conversation and make meaningful first impressions (a sophisticated way of saying I wanted to make friends) but didn't know where to start. During this time one of my friends introduced me to a book, called "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. This book was a goldmine of strategies for boosting conversational skills and it sparked my interest in understanding human behavior. Being 16, I forgot everything I learned from the book aside from one key principle, "A person's name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” In the book, Carnegie stresses the magic of using someone's name strategically in conversation. As it not only fosters a sense of familiarity but also commands their undivided attention—a combination of persuasion and influence. Implement this tool in your next conversation to foster deeper connections, but be careful not to overdo it. Too much and you'll risk coming off as insincere.
