Freeform optical surfaces have been a longtime interest for me. Previously, making them was a tricky and somewhat costly endeavor. But things are looking up, thanks to some new methods from the folks at PowerPhotonic, Inc. Now, I've been working on designing these surfaces and ran into a bit of a snag: finding an efficient way to represent them. Tried the usual methods: power series, orthogonal polynomials, splines, etc. Did not work satisfactory for me. Finally, tried interpolation and approximation using radial basis functions (RBF). Worked like a charm. Together with the team at PowerPhotonic, we put our heads together and shared our findings at the "Laser Technology for Defense and Security XVIII" conference. Exciting news - we at Metamersive - Applied Gaming are thrilled to share with you the future of hands-free controls! With the public launch of the Apple Vision Pro in early 2024, the future of human-machine interfaces is about to change. We believe that hands-free controls will be the de-facto mode of interaction with electronic devices moving forward. That's why Metamersive recently collaborated with USC Institute for Creative Technologies to create proof-of-concept medical training demos on the Meta Quest 2 and a regular computer (using Leap Motion controllers). We integrated the Open Medical Gesture (OpenMG) toolkit, developed by the MedVR team at the University of Southern California- ICT, to enable users to interact with medical simulations without any controllers. The OpenMG toolkit also allows developers to customize gestures and animations for their simulations. Our team had a blast working with Thomas Talbot & Chinmay Chinara to create these demos! In this demo, you will see how our team adapted an existing first responder virtual reality simulation to work with hand gestures instead of controllers, using the OpenMG toolkit and the hand-tracking sensors of the Meta Quest 2 VR headset. Watch how the user can perform various tasks, such as lifting the chin and operating the defibrillator, using only their hands, showcasing the potential of the OpenMG toolkit for creating immersive and realistic medical simulations.
