Developing sustainable agrotourism initiatives is crucial, and forming partnerships between the government, NGOs, and the private sector can provide the necessary support and resources.

The Lamaholot People: A Living Testament to Cultural Adaptation and Environmental Stewardship in Eastern Indonesia We recently conducted an in-depth study of the Lamaholot people of East Flores, Indonesia, revealing a remarkable narrative of cultural resilience and environmental wisdom. This indigenous community, inhabiting the mountainous archipelago between the Flores and Sawu Seas, has developed sophisticated systems of environmental adaptation that seamlessly blend traditional knowledge with contemporary practices. What particularly stands out is their intricate relationship with their environment, manifested through their traditional belief system, Rera Wulan Tana Ekan. This spiritual framework guides their sustainable resource management practices, from seasonal farming cycles to traditional fishing methods. Their agricultural practices demonstrate remarkable adaptability, with communities developing specialized knowledge based on their specific geographical locations – whether coastal, mountainous, or forest regions. The Lamaholot's culinary traditions offer fascinating insights into sustainable food systems. Their seasonal dietary patterns and simple yet nutritious food preparation methods reflect deep environmental awareness and resource conservation. Traditional dishes like nasi kolo and ikan kuah asam not only preserve cultural heritage but also embody principles of sustainable consumption. Perhaps most significantly, the Lamaholot people exemplify how indigenous communities can maintain cultural integrity while adapting to modern challenges. Their approach to environmental stewardship, combining traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary conservation needs, offers valuable lessons for sustainable development and cultural preservation in our rapidly changing world. This research highlights the crucial intersection of cultural heritage and environmental conservation, demonstrating how traditional practices can inform modern sustainability efforts. It was very inspiring to get some time with the world youth parliament for water. Melati Wijsen and I talked about the art of implementation and how we all are change makers and how we all are part of a democratic process of governance. Participating in implementation and setting clear principles of regional collaboration has helped me learn how do direct large groups of people towards a common goal. Driving change on a regional scale reduces complexity and makes human environmental systems less complicated and more manageable. - I have really enjoyed the process of changing systems on a regional and provincial level. It is so satisfying to see and feel real tangible results. -- The real problem of humanity is the following: we have paleolithic(monkey) emotions; medieval(very very old) government institutions; and god-like technology. And it is terrifically dangerous, and it is now approaching a point of crisis overall. E.O. Wilson Restoring our environment means we must take charge of our local and regional governance and face our environmental problems together. This takes building trust and creating movement and providing quick wins to overcome doubt. At Eco-Mantra we will continue to work on environmental problems around energy, water, waste and biodiversity. And we will continue to build meaningful partnerships that truly want to drive change. 1. Define clear group boundaries. 2. Match rules governing use of common goods to local needs and conditions. 3. Ensure that those affected by the rules can participate in modifying the rules. 4. Make sure the rule-making rights of community members are respected by outside authorities. 5. Develop a system, carried out by community members, for monitoring members’ behavior. 6. Use graduated sanctions for rule violators. 7. Provide accessible, low-cost means for dispute resolution. 8. Build responsibility for governing the common resource in nested tiers from the lowest level up to the entire interconnected system.

Global Dialogue on Sustainable Ocean Development July 1-5, 2024 Bali, Jakarta Raya, Indonesia The Fifth Global Dialogue on Sustainable Ocean Development will bring together multi-disciplinary stakeholders from governments, international organizations, academia and research institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and others to discuss the progress and future pathways towards sustainable ocean development. The event will consider the role of complex, trans-disciplinary approaches in moving towards a sustainable blue economy, including sessions on sustainable ocean planning and environmental-economic accounting. The Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP) is hosting the Dialogue. GOAP is a global, multi-institutional partnership established to enable countries and other stakeholders to go beyond gross domestic product (GDP) to measure and manage progress toward sustainable ocean development. The Government of Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, co-chair the GOAP. Prioritising mangrove investment is crucial for a sustainable future. Earth Security's Senior Partnership Manager, Heru Prama Yuda discussed this at the Global Future Fellows (GFF) 2024 in Bali, focusing on the theme “Forging a Climate-Economy Equilibrium.” The fellows visited the Batu Lumbang mangrove ecotourism site in Bali, a 1,300-hectare area in Grand Forest Park (Tahura) Ngurah Rai, managed by the Segara Guna collective. With 38 mangrove species, it’s a prime example of how community-driven conservation can provide economic livelihoods while achieving environmental sustainability. Indonesia is home to the world's largest mangrove area, accounting for about one-fifth of the global total. Sumatra, the second-largest Indonesian island by mangrove coverage, hosts 892,835 hectares of these vital ecosystems. In South Sumatra, significant mangrove clusters are located in the Sungsang area. However, Sungsang's mangroves face threats primarily from agricultural expansion, a situation exacerbated by poverty among vulnerable coastal communities affected by mangrove depletion. To address these challenges, CIFOR-ICRAF, in partnership with Temasek Foundation, has launched the Sungsang Mangrove Restoration and Ecotourism (#SMART) project. This initiative aims to revitalize Sumatra's precious mangrove forests through community-led efforts. Bali Regional Secretary ensures use of foreign tourist levy funds is in accordance with regulations Bali Provincial Secretary Dewa Made Indra confirmed that foreign tourist levy funds, collected since February 14, 2024, are being used in compliance with regulations. As of December 31, 2024, revenue from these levies reached over IDR318 billion, exceeding the target of IDR250 billion. The funds are designated for the protection of Bali's natural environment and culture, as outlined in Bali Provincial Regulation Number 6 of 2023. The allocations support cultural preservation initiatives, including assistance for traditional villages, subaks, and temples, while also providing financial aid for artists. In environmental efforts, funding has been directed toward waste management and recycling projects. Dewa Indra emphasized the importance of transparent revenue management but acknowledged challenges in fee collection, with many foreign tourists not paying the required Rp150,000. Ni Nyoman Sri Widhiyanti, head of the Bali Ombudsman Office, noted a focus on improving public service quality through policy assessments and enhancing local revenue and cultural tourism services. The Ombudsman reported complaints regarding the foreign tourist levy system, highlighting issues with application processes and a need for better communication about fund allocation.
