Ahead of the #HLPF in New York on Monday, we are urging political leaders to bolster their support for #NHRIs and refresh momentum for the #SDGs. The meeting will include a review of five Goals, including SDG 16, which has the “existence of independent NHRIs in compliance with the #ParisPrinciples” as a global indicator. However, a 2023 report by UN agencies described efforts towards achieving SDG 16 as “worryingly slow” and, in some cases, “even moving in the wrong direction”. To restore progress towards SDG 16, we urge Governments to strengthen existing NHRIs, including by providing them with adequate technical and financial resources, and ensuring that they and other human rights defenders are effectively protected. We also encourage the establishment of independent NHRIs in those countries where they do not currently exist. Read our statement: https://bit.ly/3zxJcef

#NHRIs play a vital role in safeguarding and advancing human rights within their respective countries. This edition of #EURightsAgency's regular update introduces two new dimensions: NHRIs involvement in overseeing the adherence to fundamental rights in the use of EU funds at national level, and how they use the EU's #FundamentalRightsCharter in their work when advising government or in education, training and awareness raising activities.

UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Climate Change; Professor of Global Environmental Law at University of Strathclyde Law School
2/3 In early October we held a virtual consultation with over 60 #NHRI representatives thanks to GANHRI (Global Alliance Of National Human Rights Institutions), where we focused on: 🖋 how to prevent and respond to loss and damage 🖌 the links between safe water, climate change, human mobility and conflict 🖍 access to remedies through judicial and non-judicial mechanisms ✒ the role of NHRIs to advise on framework laws on climate change, and on the implementation of successful climate litigation 💡 the opportunity of joint investigations across NHRIs on multinational companies During the same week, thanks to the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) and the Human Rights and Climate Change Working Group, we held two virtual consultations with civil society and Constituency Groups at UNFCCC UN, with over 75 participants. The conversation explored several key questions for the mandate, including: ➡ deep economic #transformation ❗ #discrimination & #poverty in the context of climate change ‼ impacts of large-scale #food systems on the climate system 💡 the role of evidence synthesis by the UN Special Rapporteur to support intersectionality in climate action
🤝Inspiring exchange today between #NHRIs and UN Special Rapporteur on #ClimateChange and #HumanRights, reflecting on trends, challenges, opportunities, and priorities for the mandate. Great to hear from #NHRIs from around the world on their work to advance human rights based climate action. We thank the Special Rapporteur for her consultative and participatory approach and today's opportunity—looking forward to our continued collaboration!

Women workers are making the world of work safer through the implementation of International Labour Organization Convention 190 (ILO C190) — the first international treaty to recognize the right of everyone to work free from violence and harassment. The ILO C190 is especially important for protecting women in the informal economy and migrant workers, and long term implementation of the convention must recognize and respond to the impacts of escalating climate change on worker safety. Check out our new piece in partnership with Devex featuring discussions with leaders at the forefront of the movement about what is needed to implement ILO C190.

👥 All employers in Norway have a duty to actively promote equality and prevent discrimination in the work place. This duty involves carrying out risk assessments and implementing the necessary measures. 📄For some employers there is a duty to report on their DEI efforts, gender pay gaps and involuntary part-time work together with the annual report. 📫 Many employers are unaware of their obligations in relation to DEI work and reporting, or uncertain about where to begin. In this newsletter we’ve outlined the main duties and principles to get you started. https://lnkd.in/gGE3Xdut
