Here is a very interesting article from the The New York Times offering different perspectives about the meaning of retirement. The experiences are varied, and cover the entire spectrum of the expected and unexpected.
One of my favorite reflections came from Kevin Mihaly, who like me doesn't like the word 'retirement':
“Don’t use the word retirement. It sounds decrepit and connotes imagery of rocking chairs and poor health. Somewhere, I came across the Spanish word for retirement: jubilación! Now doesn’t that sound more approachable and appealing?”
Many people hire a financial planner to assist with the financial aspects of retirement, and a lawyer to assist with estate planning and life care needs, and an insurance professional.
People should also consider hiring a coach who has experience and knowledge about all the other non-financial areas one can explore prior to and during 'retirement', i.e., navigating this transition, purpose finding, community, engagement, aging, and exploring all the possibilities available in your next phases/chapters of life.
