Values Day. Not just a picture on the wall or a bunch of words that mean nothing. Hunter Apparel Solutions take their values and culture serious. Our values day was a great opportunity to get everyone involved in refreshing what each of the values mean to them as an individual and what behaviour each staff member expects from each other. Steven Kurutz, author of the book “American Flannel,” talks about the story today during the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO) 20th anniversary Annual Meeting at The Watergate Hotel in #Washington, D.C. He has been a features reporter for The New York Times for more than a decade.  “American Flannel” is described as “the little-engine-that-could story of how a band of scrappy entrepreneurs are reviving the enterprise of manufacturing clothing in the United States.” For decades, textile and apparel manufacturing was a pillar of U.S. industry. But beginning in the 1980s, Americans went from wearing 70 percent domestic-made apparel to almost none. Even the very symbol of American freedom and style – blue jeans – got outsourced. With offshoring, the nation lost not only millions of jobs but also crucial expertise and artistry.   Dismayed by shoddy imported “fast fashion” – and unable to stop dreaming of re-creating a favorite shirt from his youth – Bayard Winthrop set out to build a new company, American Giant, that would swim against this trend. Kurutz, in turn, began to follow Winthrop’s journey. James W. McKinnon of NCTO member Cotswold Industries Inc. was also a source for the story. STOP THINKING AND START BUILDING

It's World Shoemakers Day, and I couldn't shake off the memory of the man who once told me to abandon the idea of making shoes because it is dirty work. A path he saw fit to question as if the craft that brought me joy and purpose was somehow a mark against me. As much as I have been praised for doing this work, I have been put down much more for it. I chuckled at the audacity of those who believed they could strip away my wow factor as if my identity could be bartered. If only they knew that shoemaking isn't just a skill; it is a symbol of resilience, a reminder of the problem-solving teenager who dipped her toes into the world of shoes to address a need at her secondary school. Shoemaking isn't just a craft; it is my response to a problem, my initiative to make a difference. In those moments of creativity, I discovered the power of my hands—the power to shape my destiny and the destiny of those around me. Shoemaking isn't just a profession; it is a silent rebellion against the notion that a woman's aspirations could be boxed into societal expectations. It is the essence of who I am—a woman with the skill and passion to craft, create, and leave an indelible mark on the world. As World Shoemakers Day is commemorated today, I am reminded that it's not just about making shoes; it's about owning my narrative, defying expectations, and leaving an imprint that transcends societal norms. #FeyisayomiJ

We're bullish on Bandit, an apparel brand for runners, and our latest investment. 🏃♀️ We're proud to back Nick West, Tim West and Ardith Singh as they build a remarkable brand for goal-driven runners with community at the center. Why will Bandit be big? We believe Bandit is going to be an example for others to follow of how to build *into* a community instead of bolting one on to an existing business. In doing so, Bandit will write the playbook for how to start with a core group of users who are unmet at the desire level, build for them, and enroll them in the process so they feel like they're part of the company. Bandit is the poster child for a true “brand as commune” for a certain way of life and what a co-op created brand looks like in 2024 and beyond.
