If you are a third-year SAICA trainee, this is important ❗ Wondering what you're going to do next year? We are already seeing many of our 3rd year candidates interviewing and being employed for a January 2025 start. The local newly qualified CA market is going to be a bun fight this year! We've seen an 80% reduction in newly qualified CA’s securing audit roles abroad. What that means for you is a LOT more competition for the roles you want in the South African market, the most competitive we have seen in the last 5 years. For this reason, Blue Recruiting has built CAs Online, a brand-new video-enabled platform for soon-to-be-qualified CAs (and part-qualified SAICA candidates) to get discovered by top employers in the most efficient way. Upload your profile now and stand out before others do the same. Plus, there is no cost to you. Create your profile here: https://bit.ly/4eTIVl3. How it works: - Create a profile (it only takes 10 minutes) - Record a 2-minute professional video chatting through your CV and achievements - Get discovered by hundreds of employers looking for newly-qualified CAs.

Alhamdullilah I am thrilled to announce that I have received an offer from Grant Thornton UK LLP for their 12-month Audit placement program! 🎉 Reflecting on this journey, I can't help but feel immense gratitude for the experiences and challenges that have shaped me. Hence, I’d like to share some of my valuable tips I have learnt over this period: TIP 1: PLAN 📋 Planning is crucial! Set clear goals and strategies to achieve them. Manage your time, set realistic expectations, and know your resources. Finding a placement is intense. For me, a solid plan helped balance my studies, part-time job, and social life while still dedicating time to the search. TIP 2: FOCUS 🎯 Develop discipline and endurance. The placement search can get monotonous, so stick to your plan and stay focused. Remember, competition is fierce! Don't get distracted even if you have a year to find a placement. Similar to my own situation, an unconventional degree and immigrant status are added challenges. Most importantly time is limited—no second chances! TIP 3: NETWORK🤝 You'll hear this a lot: networking is key. The right connections can transform your career path. A huge thanks to Unaludo Thando Mafa, Mahesh Perumalla and Armando Bogdanov for their support and advice. You were crucial in helping me secure my placement! TIP 4: PERSEVERE💪 You need to understand that the initial motivation in finding a placement will slowly subside especially if rejections from companies start piling up. I faced over 150+ rejections before I got my first yes. It is not easy! It is demoralising and frustrating. At some point, like myself, you might even want to give up. However, the most important thing to remember is that you’re only one yes away! TIP 5: REFLECT🔍 Missed opportunities? Time to tweak your approach! Review successful CVs and cover letters, and apply what you learn. Schedule meetings with the University of Exeter Career Zone to improve your interview and assessment skills to better match employer needs. TIP 6: ENQUIRE ❓ Always ask about placement opportunities to understand the company, role, and requirements. After rejections, seek feedback to improve. Every rejection I faced was followed by a call for feedback. Each acceptance led to questions for my network to gain deeper insights. It's better to ask than to stay clueless! TIP 7🌴 You're not a machine! Take breaks and keep track of your social life, mental, and physical health. This boosts your productivity early on and enhances your effectiveness in later hiring stages. TIP 8: FAITH🙏🏻 This is the most important tip out of all of them. Have faith in yourself and the Almighty that you will be successful! I am a firm believer that good things happen to hardworking people. You need to believe in yourself. Self-confidence and self-assurance is key. I'm excited to embark on this new chapter with Grant Thornton, where I hope to deepen my knowledge, gain practical experience, and contribute to a dynamic team. InShaAllah!

Massive congratulations to all third year audit trainees who have just received their APC results this past weekend. No matter what the outcome was, you can be extremely proud of your hard work and making it to this point! With that step of the journey over, I'm sure you are thinking about the next step for after articles. This is likely to be really daunting and overwhelming as it's the first time in a 7-8 year journey that the route isn't as clear and mapped out as we are used to in the CA(SA) qualification. Don't stress about not yet knowing exactly which route you want to take your career in next year; take the time to enjoy what you have achieved! However, I know the decision of ''what now'' can be daunting, especially when there are options of staying in SA vs moving abroad, and staying in audit vs moving out of audit. I also know that adding in advice of seniors at work, as well as recruiters definitely adds to this when every person has a different response to ''what is best''. I went to university in Stellenbosch, did my articles at Deloitte Cape Town, and then moved to Amsterdam at the end of 2022 in a non-audit role still within Deloitte. Although I am happy in both my location and role, what really helped me was speaking to people who were already in my position and could share their experience with me (both good and bad!). There are pros and cons, both to moving out of an audit role and moving abroad. My mails are open for anyone who would like to chat regarding the pros and cons of both life abroad and moving into a non-audit role, or even if you're just a bit lost about what to do next year 😊
