Last week, I talked to a client/friend about externally hiring Senior Leadership in Staffing. We agreed that those who have done very well and moved into senior positions within a corporate environment cannot necessarily apply the same toolkit to an owner-managed mid-sized business or start-up and have the same level of success. In many ways, it's a completely different job. Within a corporate environment, where folks often start as Trainees, there is a formula to follow. Dare I say, you're a cog in the wheel of a machine — you’re supported by a large peer group of management and departments to support (training, TA, marketing, etc.). When you’re the one to launch in a new country or take the reigns of an SME - you wear all the hats. It's like walking into a house that's already built and adding value (which could be significant) — or, you design and build the house, possibly even being involved in choosing the land, building it from the ground up, and creating the enterprise value from that. Maybe even whilst living in it! It's a very different beast, no doubt. Some can make that transition no problem - however, quite a few can't, and have trouble finding their natural home. Seen plenty of examples of it over the years.

Few people in the financial community have an idea of just how big this announcement is. It is no secret inside the industry that #HGV has the brand, the leads, the sales tools and have had the dry powder for M&A, but at the same time they have had their challenges. The consistent quarterly growth and performance of a publicly traded timeshare company lives and dies in Sales and Marketing: in order to have long, consistent runs of quarterly beats without hiccup, you must have the ability to organically grow sales and marketing between the M&A cycles. In this case, this growth should come in the form of the massive low-hanging fruit called "revenue synergies", from the recent Diamond Resorts and Bluegreen Vacations acquisitions. The recent appointment of Dusty Tonkin as Global Head of Sales will be a long-term game changer for HGV. Dusty grew up in a publicly-traded timeshare company called Fairfield Resorts. Coming up as a young salesman, sales manager, sales VP and regional VP, Dusty learned to run a sales business with a sense of urgency and as an economic animal. He understands the P&L and the necessary elements of being a great leader. He also has experience in this chair from his recent run as Chief Sales Officer at Bluegreen Vacations. Dusty has never had a true brand like Hilton behind him: he comes from a world where you couldn’t just be propped up on the brand, but one where you either learned to innovate, be scrappy, create value and company credibility or were destined to fail. This takes talent and a skillset not held by many. He will lead this global sales organization with his finger squarely on the pulse and with a keen sense of urgency and accountability. Congratulations to Dan Mathewes on his appointment to President and CFO, as well as his newly acquired ownership of Sales. It is a key succession signal to the street to see Dan break out of the pack as a potential heir apparent to Mark Wang.

As most of us Office Managers know; our role is not like any other - there's all sorts of different things to get involved in, and we wear many, many hats to keep our offices standing! Our roles can be technical, caring, thought provoking, challenging, fun....and a mix of all these. Happy National Careers Week! 🌟 Reflecting back to when I was just 18, searching for a part-time job to make ends meet, I never imagined I'd still be with the same company 13 years down the line! My journey with Mitchells and Butlers kicked off at a local Ember Inns, where I vividly recall clumsily pouring my first pint of Stella – more foam than beer! Who would've guessed that years later, I'd be the one coaching teams on the art of the perfect pour? 😄🍺 As I settled into the groove after a month or two, I found myself falling in love with the hospitality industry. When my General Manager transitioned to Vintage Inns, I eagerly followed suit, commencing my progression from team member to Assistant Manager while simultaneously taking on the role of district trainer for my area. Then came a pivotal moment when I stumbled upon a job opening for an Openings Team Trainer. I jumped at the opportunity, went through the interview process, and felt incredibly fortunate to land the role! Openings training became my passion – the thrill of guiding different teams week after week, immersing myself in lots of different brands. After a couple of years, I felt primed for the next phase of my journey and secured a secondment in a Training Partner role, spanning across two divisions. This then became permanent and allowed me to delve deeper into content creation and division-specific intricacies. Fast forward to today, and I'm loving my role as a Recruitment Manager! While this role presents fresh challenges from my prior training roles, I relish the daily interactions with lots of different individuals and diving into PBOs. I count myself incredibly lucky to have crossed paths with amazing colleagues and supportive managers along the way. Hospitality truly offers a myriad of career paths, and I'm grateful for the twists and turns of my journey! A perfect company is a company where: - The CEO assigns you an extra job, and when you ask for more incentives, he just simply approve it. - The CEO after approving your extra incentives request, appreciates you in front of all company mates and says (you are a loyal asset for our company, we like what you are doing and we trust your efforts 👌) - The CEO listens to your simple ideas and creations, and take them into action and announces that to all other mates to induce their spirits to imitate you - The department manager asks about what you like and dislike in the job and agrees on all your ideas for development - The team mates do like so much what you do and rely on you in the most difficult missions because they know how powerful you are scientific & procedural wise. - The team mates who are elder thus older than you in the company let you take the lead in missions and say (we need to learn how do you do it Moh), so they just let you feel that you play in "Liverpool" - The transparency is at a higher degree than Maldives water 💧 - Respect from higher rankings/positions comes before mates on same positions - The company becomes a real home and you do not want to leave it This is the perfect company dears I wish 🤞 you could find what I successfully found

What prepared you best to be a director in your industry? ✏️ My journey toward becoming a director in the real estate and Hospitality industry has been shaped by a culmination of diverse experiences and a relentless pursuit of growth and expertise. 1. Extensive Industry Experience: Over 20 years, I have immersed myself in various roles from entry-level to progressively senior roles. These experiences me with an in-depth understanding of the industry's nuances, challenges, and opportunities. 2. Leadership and Management Skills: Throughout my career, I've cultivated strong leadership abilities by spearheading [specific projects/initiatives] and leading high-performing teams. These experiences honed my skills in strategic planning, team motivation, and fostering a collaborative work environment essential for a directorial role. 3. A particular set of countries seem to be making war on the General Manager title with wild abandon No idea why but it’s really caught on In technical terms, a GM has total P&L responsibility (over the whole of a business or more rarely a division). CEO has become a more common alternative title in the West. So in a multinational, you might reasonably expect to see as many as 4 GMs. If in a company you employ 400 people and 250+ are general managers, something has gone badly badly wrong Written with due deference to the CEO/General Manager of Paperclip Solutions (at a company which doesn’t sell office supplies).
