To work this out, I will be using the latest SofaScore ratings to work out what the current League Two team of the season would be if the campaign were to end now, rather than in a few months. To select the best possible XI based on the data that the website provides, I have decided to go with the 3-5-2 formation, due to the sheer number of midfielders that have impressed in the fourth tier so far this season. One question you may be wondering is, Is there a criteria that a player needs to meet to be considered? The answer to that is yes, for players to be selected in this squad they will need to have played at least 60% of the total number of League Two minutes that their side has played so far this season. Due to the strict criteria and the high number of players, there have been several surprise exclusions from the squad including; Notts County’s David McGoldrick (7.35), Bradford City’s Andy Cook (7.33), Newport County’s Will Evans (7.26) and Salford City’s Elliot Watt (7.22). With that being said, let’s take a look at the 2023/24 League Two team of the season so far according to SofaScore… Goalkeeper: Arthur Okonkwo (7.37) Beginning in goal, Wrexham’s Arthur Okonkwo has been one of the division’s best so far this season and it is no surprise that he takes the top spot for the goalkeeping position within this squad. The 22-year-old is currently on loan from Arsenal and has kept nine clean sheets in 22 matches so far this season for the Welsh side. Similarly, he also averaged 3.5 saves per game and has been instrumental in the club’s push for a double promotion. Okonkwo is the ninth-best performer in the entire division so far this season and is 0.09 higher than Crawley Town’s Corey Addai who sits 17th on the list but is the second-highest goalkeeper. Defender: Mickey Demetriou (7.41) Kicking off the defence is Crewe Alexandra’s experienced summer recruit Mickey Demetriou who continues to prove that age is just a number, as he sits as one of League Two’s best players so far this season since his move from Newport County. The 33-year-old has made 33 appearances for Crewe Alexandra this season, being named in the team of the week seven times. Similarly, Demetriou has seven goals so far this season as well as picking up six assists which for a defender is almost unheard of. He has also managed an average of 1.1 key passes, 9 clean sheets and 6 ball recoveries per game since the start of the season. Demetriou is the fifth highest performing player this season and has helped his Crewe side to fourth in the division as they continue to pressure the likes of Wrexham and Mansfield Town for a place in the automatic promotion places. Defensively, the Jaguars must continue to tackle well and limit the splash plays. If they pressure Carr, he will make mistakes. The Saints will win if: Running back Alvin Kamara has a big night with a high volume of touches. This will take the pressure off Carr and allow the Saints to stay ahead of the chains. Defensively, their front seven dominating the line of scrimmage will make the Jags one-dimensional, which is bad news for a beat-up Lawrence. As Boselli sees it: Short weeks are always challenging, even more for the road team, and the Jaguars are a little beat up coming into the game. Obviously, Lawrence being on the field is critical. With that being said, let’s take a look at the 2023/24 League One team of the season so far according to SofaScore… Goalkeeper: Nathan Baxter (7.21) Kicking off the team between the sticks is Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Nathan Baxter, who has accumulated an average match rating of 7.21, 0.04 higher than Barnsley’s Liam Roberts and Burton’s Max Crocombe. Baxter has made 28 appearances in League One this season, averaging 2.8 saves per match and has kept an impressive 12 clean sheets, cementing his place firmly in this squad. Defender: Carl Piergianni (7.43) Stevenage’s Carl Piergianni is the next inclusion for the League One team of the season so far and with an average rating of 7.43, it would be difficult to leave him out of this team. The experienced defender is the fourth highest-rated player in the division this season, scoring four goals from 34 appearances and currently averaging 4.7 ball recoveries, 1.4 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per 90 minutes and has played a crucial role under Steve Evans once again this season. The score is tied late and one run will likely decide the game. There is a runner on second base with nobody out.  What to do?   (1) Swing Away. A hit will surely move the runner to third base and might drive him home. A hit will help the team and increase batting average, a prominent local performance metric for hitters.   (2) Sacrifice Bunt. There are many ways a runner can score from third with one out. Bunting the runner over to third base helps the team and does not affect batting average.   (3) Give Yourself Up. A ground ball to the right side of the infield will also move the runner over to but the out counts against batting average.   The first option appears to be obvious but the last is often the best strategy.    The chances of getting a base hit, depending on the batter, are at best 1 in 3. There is a much better chance of an out.   Only in the KBO can anyone bunt. A fouled off bunt with two strikes is a strike out and a rally killer.   A ground ball to the right side of the infield has the best chance for producing team success. There are many ways to get a runner home from third with one out and the goal, of course, is to get that run in and win the game.   In the dugout, teammates will acknowledge the unselfish play. He also ranked top 25% in xG per shot. As mentioned previously, he is no stranger to these kind of numbers. He can create for his teammates as well. He ranked in the top 30% for successful crosses, expected assists, and shot creating actions. To go into more detail, he ranked in the top 5% for shot creating actions from take ons and defensive actions. Beyond all of this, Julio is a forward with electrifying speed and a great touch. This makes him very dangerous when running at defenders with the ball or when making runs in behind the defense. He ranked in the top 10% for successful take ons and total progressive carrying distance. He also ranked top 10% in progressive pass receptions and touches in the box. Most notably, he ranked in the top 2% for carries into the box. Transfermarkt estimates his value at $1.5 million. Although his contract is up this December, there is a team option to extend that deal. While I imagine RSL will look to keep their closer, I can’t help but think Julio has his eye on the exit door. He is definitely a player deserving to start week in and week out. To work this out, I have used the SofaScore individual player performance ratings to compile a list of the ten best individual performances so far this season. To narrow it down further, only ten players so far this season have been given SofaScore’s perfect ten out of ten scores, with some players featuring in the list more than once, which further cements just how well certain players have performed so far this season. In order for a player to have a certain score, they will either need hat-tricks or a high amount of saves in a match as well as high scores in other areas. For example, Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder Josh Rees scored three goals in the club’s 7-1 win against Oxford City but only scored a rating of 9.1.
