At Rebecca Shah Consulting, I work with teams on some combination of strategy, operations, and people alignment to support them in performing at their best. This article is interesting to me on many levels, but what stuck out the most is this: "Building codes in the U.S. try to make buildings safe by prescribing exactly what materials must be used and how (a prescriptive code). In Sweden, the government does this by setting goals and letting builders come up with a way to achieve them (a performance code)." This is exactly the conversation I like to have with leaders and their teams. What problems are you trying to solve, and what do you want the outcomes to be? You don't need to tell your team exactly how to do it. In fact, especially if you have a high performing team, that's one way to lose them. You do need to set the direction, remove barriers, provide support, and monitor and share progress toward your goals. If you're interested in building a performance culture, let's talk.

Builders just told us that costs are up an average of 3% vs. last year. However, one publicly-traded home builder just disclosed that their costs are down 6%. I look forward to digging in deeper on what is going on here. I assume that growing market share is bringing even more economies of scale to large builders. I think it is more complicated than that though.

What are the ingredients to achieving an award for "Best Places to Work"? Commodore Builders, a veteran-owned business, has built their brand and their reputation on problem-solving, collaboration, innovation, and empowering the people who work there to achieve their individual goals, which inevitably builds the business. Not only did they welcome me into their office, Sarah Hotchkiss, Andy Timofeev, Heather Campisano, and Andrew C., sat down with me for a conversation about design, construction, business development, and how the success of the AEC industry is rooted in trust, collaboration, mentorship, and diversity. As I look into the future and make decisions on who I partner with, whether builders, designers, or clients - I realize that people are the most important asset to the success of a project, or a company, or a legacy. Having found so many optimistic, resilient and passionate people, I am more committed than ever to align myself to those values that contribute to the growth of everyone involved. Hall Chadwick // Case Study⁠ ⁠ One of my favourite projects and the venue for our Brisbane Book Launch event celebrating the release of The Next Workplace, this space speaks to so many of the principles I share with you in the book. ⁠ ⁠ Hall Chadwick are a 40 year old accounting firm, with strong ties back to Western Queensland, from the founding Partner, to the partners of today and a large agricultural client base. ⁠ ⁠ When I started working with the firm, they occupied a nondescript grey space with perimeter offices, high workstations and more filing than I have ever seen before. It really was where ambitious souls went to die! ☠️⁠ ⁠ But, inspired by this rich history we transformed their workplace into a symbol of their country values. Overtly through the material pallet and construction detail and more subtle through the flow of the space.
