🇬🇧 Do today’s power brokers continue to be born to privilege and anointed at Eton and Oxford? Or is a new progressive elite emerging with different values and political instincts? 🎩 In search of an answer, Aaron Reeves and Sam Friedman from the Department of Sociology, LSE scrutinised the profiles, interests, and careers of over 125,000 members of the British elite from the late 1890s to today. 🔎 Their findings offer an insight into who gets in, how they get there, what they like and look like, where they go to school, and what politics they perpetuate.

ISPP explores the intriguing world of Public Administration, a field that transcends the boundaries of pure science. It's a multifaceted discipline drawing from political science, sociology, economics, and more. Effective public administration hinges on the scientific application of systematic methods and principles. This ensures efficient management of government agencies, programmes, and policies. But that's just the foundation. The real impact comes from the art of leadership, communication, and critical thinking. Public administrators must be adaptable, creative, and possess strong judgement to navigate complex situations and manage public resources. 👉 Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/eEBCaZpa Parth Shah | Luis Miranda | Ram J V | Urvashi Shahi | Manu Sakunia | Siddhartha Warwade #PublicPolicy #ISPP #infographic

Two professors at Emmanuel College have conducted timely research on a topic that will become more relevant not only for higher education but for international education as more working students solicit study abroad opportunities. I think both these professors should speak at a #nafsa conference, but heck, what do I know? :) #globalthoughts #highered #highereducation #studyabroad #educationabroad #careers #workingstudents
The research of two Emmanuel professors was recently featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education, in a story about challenges faced by modern college students. Associate Professor of Criminology & Criminal Justice Dr. Janese Free and Professor of Sociology Dr. Katrin Križ led a research team of 16 students to study the academic impacts of balancing a 20-hour work week and school. Their research is in the process of being published as a book, “Compassionate College: Making Higher Education Work for Working Students.” Click below to learn more! https://lnkd.in/e4itu6W9

Authority is commonly understood as the legitimate power of a person or group over other people. In a civil state, authority is practiced by the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government. The term authority has many nuances and distinctions within various academic fields ranging from sociology to political science. The terms authority and power are inaccurate synonyms. The term authority identifies the political legitimacy, which grants and justifies the ruler's right to exercise the power of government; and the term power identifies the ability to accomplish an authorized goal, either by compliance or by obedience; hence, authority is the power to make decisions and the legitimacy to make such legal decisions and order their execution.

📚 EMPIRICAL TAKEAWAYS 👩💻 🔍 This month’s takeaway focuses on Legal Network Analysis—a technique adapted from computer science and sociology. Expert Gijs van Dijck explains in this presentation the ins and outs. It maps relationships between entities like individuals, groups, or legal information, allowing researchers to gain insights that entity attributes alone might miss. By understanding key concepts like nodes, edges, and centrality, legal scholars can examine how case importance evolves over time, identify decision clusters, and apply these findings to case law and legislation. 👋 Meet Our Dissertation Fellows Sociology student Kelly Quinn examines the changing nature of the employment relationship under shareholder value capitalism and its implications for workers' economic security. Motivated by a shift in the balance of power between workers and firms since the late 1970s, her project studies: 1) how contracting has impacted benefit provision within occupations; 2) the extent to which government workers in heavily outsourced occupations have been buffered; and 3) differences between public and private sector unions in their ability to secure quality retirement savings plans. Helping to circulate a call for participants... This graduate student is looking to interview participants about the interactions of intimate partner violence and academic experience. Happy to help you get in touch if you have questions, or feel free to reach out to the researcher directly using the included contact info! “Selena Morentin, a graduate student at CSU, Los Angeles, under the Supervision of Dr. Shweta Adur, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at CSU, Los Angeles is conducting a study analyzing intimate partner violence (IPV’s) effect on the collegiate experience of first generation college-going women. Participants include those who identify as a first generation college-going woman who has been involved in a relationship displaying forms of IPV while having attended college. We hope that our research will lead to a broader discussion as to how IPV affects students’ academic performance and agency within higher educational institutions. *Note the past tense of having gone through a relationship involving IPV while having attended college. If a potential participant is currently involved in a relationship displaying IPV, they must not participate in this study, and are strongly encouraged to seek professional counseling and other support services. Participants can include those of any degree (AA/S, BA/S, MA/S, PhD) and college status (undergraduate, graduate, graduated, no longer in college). Please view the flier.”
