UNDERSTANDING PARKINSON’S DISEASE DEMENTIA "According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 500,000 people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD), and that number is expected to double by 2040. Many of these patients have no cognitive impairment; others develop mild cognitive impairment, which does not affect their ability to perform daily tasks independently. But an estimated one-fourth of patients diagnosed with PD develop Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD), according to Jumana Alshaikh, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and co-director of the Parkinson’s Disease Center of Excellence at University of Utah." September is World Alzheimer’s Month – a time to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and all types of dementias. Neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease cause substantial distress for both people with dementia and their caregivers. They are among the earliest signs and symptoms of neurocognitive disorders and cognitive decline, yet are under-recognized and often challenging to treat. Approximately 40% of people living with Alzheimer's experience delusions and hallucinations. MapLight Therapeutics, Inc. is committed to advancing our program for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease Psychosis. June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, and we are proud to join the Alzheimer's Association® in a conversation about the brain, #Alzheimers disease, and related dementias. There are an estimated 47 million people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias worldwide, and these numbers are expected to grow to 76 million by 2030. More clinical research is needed to understand these neurodegenerative diseases, and to find new approaches to diagnose and treat them. Join us as we champion research and treatment initiatives that push the boundaries of innovation and positively impact the health and lives of people living with these neurological disorders. "True or false? The brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease actually, physically shrink. True. Alzheimer's disease causes progressive brain atrophy, leading to the shrinkage of brain tissues. This physical change is associated with the cognitive decline experienced by individuals with Alzheimer's. Understanding these realities is crucial for early detection and intervention. Let's raise awareness and support research to advance our understanding of Alzheimer's, aiming for breakthroughs in treatment and prevention. Knowledge empowers us to make informed choices in the journey toward brain health. 🧠 #AlzheimersAwareness #BrainHealth #KnowledgeIsPower #WellnessJourney#DHEEHospitals #NammaDHEE #HealthierHappier

Dear Colleagues, An interesting American Journal of Case Reports publication highlights the potential correlation between COVID-19 and neurodegenerative conditions, specifically prion disorders. The case report describes a 62-year-old patient who presented with rapidly progressive dementia, walking difficulties, and myoclonus after testing positive for COVID-19. Despite negative results on various diagnostic tests, CSF protein 14-3-3 testing was positive, fulfilling the probable diagnostic criteria for prion disease (PrD). This case raises intriguing questions about the impact of COVID-19 on neurodegeneration, although further studies are needed to establish a definite correlation. The complete report is now available on the American Journal of Case Reports webpage. | https://lnkd.in/dJeKuGUa
