"Biotechnology and its application to manufacturing bio-based products, biomanufacturing can be part of the solution to address many societal and environmental challenges, such as climate mitigation and adaptation, access to and sustainable use of natural resources, restoration of vital nature systems, food supply and security, and human health" Especially, biotechnology can help reduce the EU's external dependencies including in the agri-food sector by enabling a more efficient and reduced use of natural resources and input materials (chemical synthetic pesticides or mineral fertilisers). The recent announcement on biotechnology from the EU Commission has highlighted the crucial role enzymes can play in boosting the biotech industry in the EU. How? Enzymes can contribute to a more sustainable future – for example, by helping to lower carbon emissions and enabling a circular economy. ♻️ Fred Wondergem, Director, Scientific & Public Affairs at IFF and AMFEP President, explains in the AMFEP 2024-2029 manifesto how their proven track record of safe use and ability to enable the Green Deal could help keep the EU at the forefront of biotechnology. It is therefore essential that we adopt a nuanced approach to legislation that recognizes their unique value and contribution. Rather than constraining their use with a hazard-based approach, We should ensure that enzymes are adequately regulated for advancing our industries and improving our quality of life.
