I was honored to be a speaker at the 39th Space Symposium last week, and many thanks to my good friend and colleague Troy Thomas at Boston Consulting for sponsoring the panel. During the panel, I advocated for the USG to provide a pathway for on-orbit operational demonstrations of new space tech through a regular cadence of dedicated launches to showcase such capabilities. Such “innovation” launches would help address the issue of flight heritage, one of the biggest obstacles to getting new space tech adopted. A very large portion of the space innovation economy is locked out of paying for their own demonstrations due to costs, and nearly all USG R&D grant programs simply aren’t sufficient to both develop needed tech and pay for a launch to demo it. This deprives our space forces from seeing and choosing from the most cutting-edge emerging capabilities they could use. The non-space part of the DoD is rich in opportunities for innovation and experimentation in operationally relevant environments, and as such, enjoys a far more rapid uptake of new capabilities when compared to our forces in space. The US can never allow itself to be in a fair fight—we must always have a technological edge over our adversaries, particularly in space. Defense Tech Hackathon Nov 23/24th! In today's battlefield the first line of defense is often the individual: if you can't protect an individual how can you protect a nation? The theme of this Defense Tech Hackathon is "In Defense of the West" - to focus on solutions that can safeguard personal freedoms and liberty in addition to the self-determination of free nations by repelling foreign aggressors. Held aboard the USS Hornet CVS-12 Aircraft Carrier in Alameda, we'll be providing contestants with well-defined mission profiles sponsored by companies and DoD units, mentorship from industry leading judges, venture investors, founders and military veterans, and access to things like satellite imagery and cloud compute credits to supercharge your hackathon solutions. Mission profiles cover a range of technical areas like radiofrequency engineering, firmware development, UAV platforms, and pure software applications in AI and intelligence gathering. Both the United States and Europe are investing in orbital demonstrations of satellites with the goal of developing a capability that can mitigate jamming and spoofing. Existing Global Navigation Satellite Service (GNSS), which provides core positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) networks, are comprised of often susceptible and easily compromised L-band signals.
