De Niro’s Downfall (and Ours) Article- By now, we should be accustomed to seeing favorite performers betray us, risking years of goodwill and fond memories to express petulant political bias and empty promises. (“I’ll leave America if . . . ”) But the utter disgrace that actor Robert De Niro has made of himself — through profane and irrational outbursts against President Trump and American civility — hurts deeper than most. De Niro told a local New York news show that he called Biden to volunteer, gushing, “I’ll do anything you need me to do.” This partisanship differs from how actors Burt Lancaster, Marlon Brando, Harry Belafonte, and Charlton Heston risked their careers to participate in the 1963 March on Washington. Their response, in the last days of liberal decency, answered a nation’s need, not elitist tyranny. A politician or journalist may practice deceit, but a great actor should not. The power of De Niro’s acting transcended play-acting to find universal truths — not Oprah’s “your truth,” but our truth. And that’s what De Niro’s political tantrums have debased. We used to assume that De Niro was our guy because his performances indicated that he understood our deepest feelings. His decision to stand outside the New York Trump trial cost the actor his credibility. ( FYI, De Niro Real New Yorkers are ashamed of you and embarrassed by you, not Trump. 🏆 Two things from two very different directors stuck out for me from this years Oscars' highlights (because, let's be real how many people who were not physically there actually watched the whole thing?) #Jonathan Glazer's powerful defence of Gazan lives and his rebuttal of the exploitation of historical wrongs to justify present wrongs. But also #Cord Jefferson's invitation for the industry to take risks. "But $200 million movies are also a risk. And it doesn’t always work out, but you the risk anyway. Instead of making one $200 million movie, try making 20 $10 million movies. Or 50 $4 million movies." They both made me think about the powerful role that media and mediamakers can still play in our society as well as the value of independence. The ability to express and create without impediments. They made me think about the grown suite of tools that are being developed that are allowing creators to do more and more independently 🤔 https://lnkd.in/e9GbZR7a
