Defining a carbon-neutral building is harder than you may think. While many terms are used to describe such buildings, there are no global standards. Experts agree that net carbon emissions must be zero for a building to be considered carbon neutral. Making a building highly energy efficient is the first step towards achieving this goal. The European Union defines a zero-emission building as one with a very high energy performance, where the low amount of energy still required is fully covered by energy from renewable sources, and there are no on-site carbon emissions from fossil fuels. On the other hand, the World Green Building Council defines a net-zero energy building as one where on-site renewable resources supply 100% of the energy demand, while off-site renewable energy use is termed "net zero operational carbon." There are many aspects to consider and many technologies available to help you achieve your sustainability goals.
