And that’s a wrap! The #IAA2024 is behind us. So, what did we take away from the show? Is there more solar technology than just on the Ferris wheel?
Over 1,700 exhibitors from 41 countries showcased their latest innovations. Positioned in Hall 27, OPES Solar Mobility was right in the middle, surrounded by the IAA heavyweights – Trucks and Trailers.
The solar-powered Ferris wheel wasn’t the only spotlight on solar. Numerous companies displayed their solar products or solar-equipped trailer, emphasizing the growth of the industry.
The conversation is evolving. It’s no longer about whether solar tech is beneficial, it’s about how to effectively integrate it. Market acceptance is clearly on the rise. You get the feeling that everyone in Hall 27 and beyond is in a race for greater efficiency and is using photovoltaics as one of the means.
This goes hand in hand with the ongoing electrification. Not only are drivetrains being electrified - with some already in series production or set to launch by the end of the year - but other components as well.
Refrigeration units shown are either hybrid or fully electric, making the energy harvested from solar directly consumable. As powering cooling units is already a business case, having them electrified paves the way for more solar-powered efficiency.
A trend we noticed are certainly e-axles or e-trailer. With energy recuperation, these systems capture energy, store it, and push the tractor what safes fuel. So, trailers are getting their own high-voltage batteries. This is another great opportunity for solar, as trailers equipped with 5kWp can then seamlessly integrate that energy.
The demand for plug and play solar products continues to grow. Our SolFlex Cab Set, a kit designed to enhance driver comfort while reducing the need for battery replacements, is just one example of how solar solutions are already equipped on trucks.
We’re also seeing increased interest in solar technology "Made in Germany." Maintaining a secure value chain and accessible local contacts is becoming essential. Developing integrated road-ready solutions in collaboration with OEMs and box builders will be key.
The past week was full of great meetings and productive discussions. We are moving ahead and whilst there may be some ups and downs, the road before us is certainly a sunny one with solar not only on the horizon but already on the road.
