Below is a message I received for one of my artist's concerts, showing how promoters and ticketing companies are working to protect fans from scalpers and their bots. People think these bots are only impacting the major superstar act shows the moment they go on sale, but they are involved in every portion of the live event timeline. This show was on sale for several weeks and close to a sellout, so the promoters used their "carting bots" to test how many tickets were left, and if it was at the threshold they believed it was about to sell, they used their bots to buy the remainder of the tickets. These processes are fully automated and happening on every show! "After doing a forensic analysis of the data we found 58 orders totaling 450 tickets with suspicious activity. Please let us know if you’d like us to ask us to cancel those orders. Some helpful anti-scalper measures are to implement a smaller ticket limit per household while also limiting mobile transfer delay to 72 hours before show date. The entire ticketing fiasco aside, the hype about Coldplay’s #Mumbai concert makes sense. And I wish to see more genuine excitement about concerts of bands/artistes like #Coldplay. Let me explain why: Coldplay have always been one of the best live acts. Their signature brand of music and use of #technology to create a euphoric experience aside, what they represent is #community. Whether they get massive streams and social media #engagement in between releases or not, they’ve always gotten massive footfalls. That is the magic of Coldplay LIVE: they make you feel like you belong. And that feeling is becoming more and more desirable. Especially at a time where connections are fleeting, conversations are exhausting, and just about anything is passing in the name of #personalisation. What truly sets them and their #music apart is their honesty, radical acceptance and the ability to make people truly happy. Fans attend a Coldplay concert not just as a recreational activity, but to feel like themselves for a few hours and to be a part of something bigger than themselves. To also genuinely have fun unlike the thousand activities where they only pretend to have fun or be happy. And that makes a world of difference for a population that is incentivised to hide their true self in their day-to-day life. In Coldplay’s world, everyone is part of a collective experience. It’s about belonging without conditions, and in today’s culture of curated identities that’s revolutionary. So, beyond the music and the spectacle, what Coldplay offers is an antidote to a postmodern life: a reminder that no matter how disconnected we may feel, there’s still space for genuine human #connection.
