At the time, this was Magic: The Gathering's most-viewed video. Since then, they've retconned the origin (happens often in genre entertainment), so it's now unlisted. This began with an impromptu pitch in a meeting. The CEO wanted a trailer to be used as part of a presentation deck for a proposed Magic movie, and they were already working with a firm in L.A. toward that end. Before I got involved, there had been a few attempts at a script — some from R&D; at least one from my CD — all were nixed. So here I am, in a meeting with that CD, my AD, and the MarCom VP. While we're talking, words and images start to form in my mind. I jot them down. And then chime in with, "My name is Gideon, and I'm about to die..." The MarCom VP was thrilled. She asked me to write it up and come back asap. Fifteen minutes later, she and I took it the CEO's office. I pitched it. He loved it. So much so, that he decided he wanted to make it the foundation of that year's acquisition campaign. So that's what we did. I chose Gideon because he was one of the lesser Planeswalkers. A "white" (Magic has five colors, representing character/power types) character (white is not that aggro) that fans weren't really passionate about. Of course, I first thought of two of the more popular Planeswalkers, but they already had too much lore, and thus baggage, and would come with passionate fans inside and outside our offices, and therefore came with all sorts intractable opinions, which was confirmed by the R&D story guy telling me that she (and three others) were off-limits (his was one of the rejected scripts, btw). There were some grumblings about using Gideon (R&D generally hated MarCom, along with advertising efforts to reach new players), but they soon dissipated after it was shown to cheers and applause at the all-hands meeting. I suspect those naysayers were thinking it would go nowhere beyond our walls. The video was an immediate YouTube hit, with fans clamoring for it to be made into a movie. The one we'd wanted to make. Alas. The Magic movie (latest is that it may become a Netflix streamer) is still in development. The featured character will be...Gideon.
