Hiring a security leader? That can be tricky. Many people serving in those roles focus first on tactics and operational capabilities. Hiring a true security executive or CISO can be key to avoid building unnecessary capabilities that can add expense and slow down the business. This is especially important in a modern tech company who use leading practices that drive change. Things to consider? • Can they understand the business and align security to it? • Do they ground in risk (asset + threat + vulnerability) and not just vulnerabilities? • Can they understand your market and compliance drivers -- navigating them only doing what's necessary at the right time? • Can they identity security features for your products that create competitive advantage? Building too much too soon is difficult to walk back. Your customer contracts will enforce it and it's difficult to explain why you stop doing something that might have been avoided. The wrong hire can compound this challenge whereas a strategic CISO can drive value. #ciso #hiring #healthtech #strategy

How many applicants did you review the last time you hired? How many hours did you spend interviewing people who weren’t a good technical or cultural fit? I’ve reviewed data from the customer hires I’ve personally recruited over the past FIVE years, and I’m proud to share these stats: Two candidates were submitted for each hire made by a customer. Imagine how much time you could save by receiving just two applicants and making the right hire. My core areas of focus include: - Security Leadership - Security Engineering - Security Operations - Offensive Security Locations: Australia and the U.S. If you're hiring in these areas, let’s connect. I might be able to save you a lot of time. CyberSec People

What happens when you hire the wrong security executive? I was winding down my work as a security leader at a growth stage startup before sale and getting to know leaders at an early stage healthtech considering working with them. They wanted to hire me but quickly. I told them I needed a few months to finish my current work before starting. But they were impatient, and wanted to hire immediately. I helped them interview potential candidates as a courtesy. They found a mid-level manager who had compliance experience consulting with large companies -- not startups. They were tactical, not strategic. My feedback was too late. They hired them anyway. The person lasted less than a year and did a lot of damage along the way -- building capabilities the organization didn't need, slowing them down, adding unnecessary expense, affecting the product and customer experience. And they didn't produce results. Be sure to think about security strategically -- building the right capabilities at the right time -- and be extra careful about hiring tactical managers to build strategic functions. If not, more damage could be done than you'd expect. #cybersecurity #strategy #hiring #ciso

Our Security team works to create and maintain the safest operating environment for Google's users and developers. As a Security Engineer, you help protect network boundaries, keep computer systems and network devices hardened against attacks and provide security services to protect highly sensitive data like passwords and customer information. Responsibilities Conduct vulnerability research and exploit development. Create tools and infrastructure that enables the team to scale up our research efforts. Engage the wider defensive community by publishing results.
