https://lnkd.in/dHuXU9tx This week's 'Turning Point' in today's issue of 'The Perfect Voice' speculates an alternate vision of India where Aurangzeb has lost the 'War of Succession' (1658-59) and Dara Shikoh triumphs. While Aurangzeb, the peerless battle-hardened tactician, decisively defeated Dara and the imperial forces thrice at Dharmat, Samugarh and Deorai, the prospect of an India under Dara is intriguing and one which would have completely changed the trajectory of modern Indian history. Apart form Dara's syncretic vision, the intense internal discord - the Rajput Revolt, the debilitating 26-year-long Mughal-Maratha War, the risings of the Sikhs and Jats among other disturbances - would probably have been mitigated. The swift collapse of the Mughal empire that followed Aurangzeb's death in 1707 might have been delayed as well. The reference point here is Sir Jadunath Sarkar's monumental five-volume masterpiece 'History of Aurangzib' (composed between 1912 and 1924), which still hands heads and shoulders above more modern works on Alamgir. #History #books #India #Mughals #Aurangzeb #Marathas #Rajputs #Sikhs #wars #religion
